Effect of thermal crosslinking process on membrane structure and PEM fuel cell applications performed with SPEEK-PVA blend membranes

Yavuz Yagizatli et al.

Summary: Fuel cell technology, especially the PEM fuel cell, shows great promise as a clean and sustainable energy option. The study focuses on the development of a blend membrane using SPEEK and PVA with different sulfo-nation degrees, aiming to improve the stability and prevent dissolution in water. Thermal crosslinking was found to effectively prevent the dissolution of membranes and enhance their stability. Comparative analysis of various membrane characteristics demonstrated the improved structural stability of the thermally crosslinked membranes.

Novel Crosslinked Sulfonated PVA/PEO Doped with Phosphated Titanium Oxide Nanotubes as Effective Green Cation Exchange Membrane for Direct Borohydride Fuel Cells

Marwa H. Gouda et al.

Summary: In this study, a binary polymer blend of PEO and PVA was formulated and doped with phosphated titanium oxide nanotube (PO4TiO2) to enhance the performance of a direct borohydride fuel cell. The addition of PO4TiO2 improved the ionic conductivity and power density of the membranes, while also increasing their oxidative stability and tensile strength. The fabricated membrane showed higher selectivity compared to Nafion117 and could serve as an efficient proton exchange membrane for green and low-cost DBFCs.

Efficient and durable composite membranes based on polydopamine-mediated sulfonated graphene oxide for direct methanol fuel cells

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: A new type of sulfonated graphene oxide product, SDGO, is fabricated by sulfonation on polydopamine (PDA) deposited graphene oxide, resulting in improved uniformity/sufficient sulfonation compared to PDA-free SGO. The sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) composite membranes filled with SDGO exhibit better matrix-filler compatibility, larger hydrophilic domains, and improved proton conductivity, methanol barrier, and mechanical properties. SPEEK-SDGO based DMFCs outperform Nafion 212 based DMFCs in terms of power density and exhibit superior durability during DMFC operations.
