Capacity fading mechanisms and state of health prediction of commercial lithium-ion battery in total lifespan

Jialong Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the aging mechanisms and state of health prediction of lithium-ion batteries throughout their lifespan. Battery capacity fading is divided into three stages: stable fading, fast fading, and repetition between capacity increase and decrease. Incremental capacity analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are used to study relevant aging mechanisms. In the first stage, aging mechanisms include loss of lithium and active material at both electrodes. In the second stage, aging mechanisms are loss of lithium and active material at the negative electrode. In the third stage, the loss of lithium is recovered to increase capacity. Finally, a back propagation neural network optimized by genetic algorithm is used to predict the state of health of lithium-ion batteries, including cycle life, second-life use, and residual capacity.

Noninvasive Aging Analysis of Lithium-Ion Batteries in Extreme Cold Temperatures

Adrian Soto et al.

Summary: This article presents a noninvasive technical analysis of degradation in four lithium-ion batteries used in extreme frigid weather conditions. The batteries were aged during an expedition in the WindSled project, covering over 2500 km on the East Antarctic Plateau using a zero-emission vehicle. The study shows that the batteries experienced a 5% capacity fade and a 30% increase in internal resistance, but no substantial increase in the impedance of the solid electrolyte interface. These results indicate that the batteries can successfully operate at -50 degrees C and can still be used in future expeditions, providing financial and environmental benefits.

A Comprehensive Review on the Characteristics and Modeling of Lithium-Ion Battery Aging

Wiljan Vermeer et al.

Summary: Battery aging is a critical problem in battery research that limits the power and energy capacity during the battery's life. This article reviews empirical and semiempirical modeling techniques and aging studies, highlighting the limitations and challenges of different models. The study finds that stress factors are often oversimplified and their correlations are not taken into account. The knowledge provided in this article can be used to evaluate the limitations of aging models and improve their accuracy for various applications.

Simulation of cooling plate effect on a battery module with different channel arrangement

Xinke Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of layout and channel design of cooling plates on the heat dissipation of lithium-ion battery modules in electric vehicles. The design with two cooling plates sandwiching one battery module shows better cooling performance, and cooling plates with multiple small flow channels perform optimally at certain inlet flow rates.

Energy management of stationary hybrid battery energy storage systems using the example of a real-world 5 MW hybrid battery storage project in Germany

Tjark Thien et al.

Summary: This paper conducts an analysis of different energy management algorithms for hybrid battery energy storage systems using the example of the M5BAT project. It develops heuristic algorithms and optimization approaches for power allocation and introduces models for the components and effects that contribute to operating costs. Simulation results show significant differences in the operating costs between the algorithms, validating the economic advantage of hybrid BESS over mono-technology BESS.

Optimization strategy of secondary frequency modulation based on dynamic loss model of the energy storage unit

Cuiping Li et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an optimal control strategy based on the ESS unit loss and dynamic model. By establishing dynamic variable-parameter model and analyzing the requirements of AGC signals, a double-level control strategy is proposed, which successfully reduces the capacity loss and improves the frequency regulation effect.

Marvin Messing et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a method for estimating State of Health (SoH) of batteries using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) technology, combining fractional order impedance modeling and short-term relaxation effects for rapid SoH determination. The method has demonstrated an average estimation error of less than 1% and offers a new way of utilizing EIS for SoH estimation.

Optimization of charging strategy for lithium-ion battery packs based on complete battery pack model

Yunjian Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a comprehensive charging strategy for battery packs considering charging time, aging, and energy loss, optimized with a genetic algorithm. The results show that while the fast charging strategy can significantly reduce charging time, it can also lead to aging and increased energy loss.
