Melting and energy storage characteristics of macro-encapsulated PCM-metal foam system

Jishnu Shankar Baruah et al.

Summary: A novel encapsulated phase change material-metal foam hybrid system is proposed for energy storage applications, aiming to improve the melting rate of PCM with metal foam structures inside the capsules. A numerical model is developed to simulate the melting process and the energy storage characteristics are influenced by the metal foam structure. The study reveals that the metal foam structure plays a crucial role in determining the melting pattern and energy storage characteristics, with factors such as capsule size, porosity, and shell thickness affecting the melting time.

A critical review on phase change material energy storage systems with cascaded configurations

S. Christopher et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the performance of cascaded or multiple phase change materials (PCMs) in latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) systems, highlighting the potential for improving energy component performance through cascaded techniques and other enhancement approaches. It also discusses the influence of stage numbers on the cascaded LHTES unit performance and provides a recommended range for these parameters. The study suggests that replacing single PCM with multiple PCMs can enhance the performance of thermal energy storage systems in terms of energy efficiency and charging/discharging rate.

Melting performance enhancement of PCM based thermal energy storage system using multiple tubes and modified shell designs

Rehan Qaiser et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted for heat transfer enhancement in a horizontal Latent Thermal Energy Storage System using multiple heat transfer tubes and modified shell designs. The results showed that vertical double tube and triple tube V-configuration significantly improve heat transfer rates compared to the Base Case, with a corresponding reduction in complete melting times. Additionally, elliptic and triangular shell design modifications were found to increase heat transfer rates and reduce melting times effectively.

Effect of geometric parameter and nanoparticles on PCM melting in a vertical shell-tube system

Changda Nie et al.

Summary: The charging process of a vertical shell-tube latent heat storage system with two HTF injection orientations was studied. Results showed stronger heat transfer for top injected HTF during the convection dominant stage, and better heat transfer for bottom injected HTF during the conduction stage. Investigation on PCM thickness ratio and nanoparticles concentration revealed shorter melting time for bottom injected HTF, and better enhancement from nanoparticles with bottom injection, with the recommended R = 0.05 for maximizing thermal performance.

Summary: An experimental study was conducted to analyze the melting behavior of erythritol in an energy storage unit with multi-finned tubes. The melting of PCM was mainly influenced by natural convection, leading to a faster melting process. Storage unit with longitudinal multiple tubes showed the best thermal performance and significant increase in the rate of PCM melting during the charging process.
