The relationship between physical activity, BMI, circadian rhythm, and sleep with cognition in bipolar disorder

Jennifer L. Burgess et al.

Summary: This study suggests an association between sleep abnormalities and cognition in patients with bipolar disorder, with little or no relationship with physical activity, BMI, and circadian rhythm.

Genetic analysis of activity, brain and behavioral associations in extended families with heavy genetic loading for bipolar disorder

Annabel Vreeker et al.

Summary: Increased physical activity and improved sleep were associated with larger brain size, better cognitive function, and more stable temperament in both BP-I patients and their non-BP-I relatives. Pleiotropy of several actigraphy-behavior and actigraphy-brain phenotypes was also found, suggesting shared genetic influences between these traits.

Real-time mobile monitoring of bipolar disorder: a review of evidence and future directions

Gideon P. Dunster et al.

Summary: Mobile technologies have provided valuable insights into the circadian system, sleep patterns, and motor activity in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). The use of real-time monitoring has revealed diverse sleep disturbances, variability in motor activity, and evening orientation among BD patients. Future research should focus on identifying common biological pathways that influence the interrelations between sleep, physical activity, and circadian patterns. Collaborative efforts in applying multimodal sensor technology will enhance our understanding of the mechanisms and dynamics of BD.

Physical Activity Is Associated With Lower Long-Term Incidence of Anxiety in a Population-Based, Large-Scale Study

Martina Svensson et al.

Summary: The study showed that participating in an ultralong-distance cross-country ski race was associated with a lower risk of developing anxiety, but in women, higher physical performance may increase the risk of anxiety, which warrants further investigation.
