Cyanazine herbicide monitoring as a hazardous substance by a DNA nanostructure biosensor

Hassan Karimi-Maleh et al.

Summary: The research focused on monitoring cyanazine levels using an electrochemical strategy, synthesizing a Pt-Pd-CdO/SWCNTs composite and modifying a gold electrode for detection. The composite showed improved conductivity and lower charge-transfer resistance, allowing for monitoring of cyanazine at nanomolar concentrations. Differential pulse voltammograms indicated a linear dynamic range and detection limit, while molecular docking studies supported experimental results. The composite was successfully utilized for monitoring cyanazine in food and water samples.

Removal of paracetamol from aqueous solution by activated carbon and silica. Experimental and computational study

Agustin Spaltro et al.

Summary: The presence of pharmaceutical residues in aquatic environments is a global issue, with the high consumption of Paracetamol leading to continuous discharge in water bodies. This study focused on the removal of Paracetamol using adsorption technique with different adsorbents, revealing higher adsorption in acidic pH and increased adsorption capacity with higher ionic strength. Experimental data fitted well with pseudo-second order and Langmuir models, while density functional theory provided atomistic details on the adsorption mechanism.

Prioritizing pharmaceuticals based on environmental risks in the aquatic environment in China

Jiahua Guo et al.

Summary: In the last two decades, there has been an increase in the number of detected activated pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the natural environment globally, leading to the need for prioritizing and ranking APIs of high concern. A new method was developed in this study to estimate the priority of APIs by using the number of products per API on the market multiplied by its daily dose, along with hazard assessment and risk scoring. This approach could potentially be applied in countries/regions where information on API usage is limited or non-existent.

Summary: Furfural production from xylose using p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst in DMSO medium was studied. The optimal catalyst was found to be pTSA-CrCl3 • 6H2O, which achieved a high furfural yield of 53.10% at 120 degrees C. Kinetic modeling showed that the condensation of furfural in the solvent medium could be neglected.

Removal of persistent organic contaminants from wastewater using a hybrid electrochemical-granular activated carbon (GAC) system

Giannis-Florjan Norra et al.

Summary: A three-dimensional electrochemical flow-through reactor with GAC packed bed was evaluated for the removal of persistent organic contaminants from real sewage effluent. Results showed enhanced adsorption ability of GAC at high current density, along with a synergistic effect between electrosorption/adsorption on GAC and electrooxidation for the removal of various pollutants. The addition of GAC also decreased concentrations of toxic chlorates and perchlorates, as well as organic iodides and organic chlorines, in the effluent.
