Higher prevalence of CTX-M-27-producing Escherichia coli belonging to ST131 clade C1 among residents of two long-term care facilities in Southern Spain

Lorena Lopez-Cerero et al.

Summary: The international lineage of the CTX-M-27-producing clade C1 of Escherichia coli ST131 has recently emerged. The study found that a significant proportion of individuals in two LTCFs in Seville were colonized with fluoroquinolone-resistant E. coli ST131, with a high percentage of ESBL/pAmpC producers. C1 isolates were more common than C2 and more often produced bla(ESBL/pAmpC) genes, with some cases showing strain sharing.

Screening for antimicrobial-resistant Gram-negative bacteria in hospitalised patients, and risk of progression from colonisation to infection: Systematic review

Guglielmo Arzilli et al.

Summary: This study investigated screening practices on admission to hospital wards and the risk of developing infection from colonisation. It found that the burden of antimicrobial-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (AMR-GNB) colonisation and the risk of progression to infection vary significantly across regions, pathogens, and time in hospitals.

NDM-1 Introduction in Portugal through a ST11 KL105 Klebsiella pneumoniae Widespread in Europe

Angela Novais et al.

Summary: This study characterized a strain of NDM-1-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae responsible for an outbreak in Portugal and investigated its spread in an international context. The outbreak strain was identified as ST11 KL105 and showed differences from previous strains. This strain has successfully disseminated in Europe with varying plasmid backgrounds and beta-lactamases. The study highlights the use of FT-IR spectroscopy as an important tool for rapid infection control.

Epidemiological Characterization of Colistin and Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacteriaceae in a Tertiary: A Hospital from Anhui Province

Muhammad Fazal Hameed et al.

Summary: The study revealed the coexistence of mcr-1, bla(KPC-2), and bla(NDM-1) in clinical isolates from a tertiary hospital in Hefei, China. The prevalence of different Enterobacteriaceae sequence types, especially in E. coli, is concerning. Holding such resistance profiles poses a threat to humans and animals, requiring immediate and persistent control measures to address this hazard.

First Report of blaNDM-1 Bearing IncX3 Plasmid in Clinically Isolated ST11 Klebsiella pneumoniae from Pakistan

Hazrat Bilal et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of various carbapenemases-producing K. pneumoniae strains in clinical samples from Pakistan, with a high prevalence of those carrying the bla(NDM-1) gene. These strains with different sequence types also showed some variation in cluster analysis. This study also identified IncX3 plasmids carrying the bla(NDM-1) gene for the first time in Pakistan, suggesting a potential new vehicle for disseminating bla(NDM-1) among Enterobacteriaceae due to its high transferability rate.

Molecular characterization of multidrug resistant Enterobacterales strains isolated from liver and kidney transplant recipients in Spain

Marta Fernandez-Martinez et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the mechanisms of resistance to carbapenems and other extended-spectrum-beta-lactams in solid-organ transplantation recipients, and to determine the genetic relatedness of multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales (MDR-E) causing colonization or infection. The findings showed that the number of patients colonized by MDR-E post-transplantation was significantly higher than pre-transplantation, with the presence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases. The study observed a low rate of MDR-E infection in colonized patients 4-6 weeks post-transplantation.
