Microbial community and functional prediction during the processing of salt production in a 1000-year-old marine solar saltern of South China

Ya-Li Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, DNA sequencing and biochemical technologies were used to analyze the bacterial and fungal communities in the Danzhou Ancient Saltern in Hainan Island, South China. The results showed that both bacterial and fungal communities undergo significant changes during the salt-making process. The bacterial community is dominated by Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Cyanobacteria, while the fungal community is dominated by Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Mortierellomycota. The succession of bacterial community is closely related to salt physicochemical properties and bacteria themselves, while the fungal community is more closely associated with physicochemical properties.

Vibrio harveyi isolated from marine aquaculture species in eastern China and virulence to the large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea)

A. Yang et al.

Summary: This study found that Vibrio harveyi isolates from maricultured species in eastern China displayed significant genetic diversity, varied antimicrobial resistance, and different plasmid profiles. Most isolates from fish hosts carried plasmids, and those with plasmids showed higher virulence to large yellow croaker.

Community Structure of Protease-Producing Bacteria Cultivated From Aquaculture Systems: Potential Impact of a Tropical Environment

Yali Wei et al.

Summary: Protease-producing bacteria, including dominant genera Bacillus and Vibrio, were isolated from tropical aquaculture systems, with sediment showing higher diversity and abundance than water. Unique genera in sediment and water may contribute to the stability of community structure, with environmental variables playing important roles in shaping the bacterial diversity and community structure. The findings suggest the potential use of these bacteria for wastewater purification and the development of environmentally friendly aquaculture models in tropical regions.

Culture-dependent and culture-independent characterization of bacterial community diversity in different types of sandy lands: the case of Minqin County, China

Yali Wei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the bacterial community diversities in different types of sandy lands in Minqin, where high salinity and poor nutrition create an oligotrophic environment. The presence of host plants primarily shapes the bacterial community, with Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and other phyla dominating in the rhizospheres of Nitraria tangutorum and Haloxylon ammodendron.

Multi-Strain Tropical Bacillus spp. as a Potential Probiotic Biocontrol Agent for Large-Scale Enhancement of Mariculture Water Quality

Wei Ren et al.

Summary: The study developed multi-strain tropical Bacillus spp. as a potential probiotic biocontrol agent for improving aquaculture water quality. The selected strains effectively removed pollutants and inhibited harmful bacteria even at low concentrations. The multi-strain probiotic was safe for shrimp and could be stored for long periods at room temperature, showing potential for large-scale commercial applications in marine aquaculture systems.
