Multipartite symbioses in fungus-growing termites (Blattodea: Termitidae, Macrotermitinae) for the degradation of lignocellulose

Farhan Ahmad et al.

Summary: Fungus-growing termites utilize a multipartite symbiotic system to degrade lignocellulose, thereby increasing crop productivity, protecting their nests, and maintaining microenvironment stability inside the colony.

Investigation of Physicochemical Indices and Microbial Communities in Termite Fungus-Combs

Guiying Yang et al.

Summary: Termitomyces species are wild edible mushrooms that are difficult to cultivate due to their symbiotic association with termites. This study examined the differences in physicochemical indices and microbial communities between combs with and without Termitomyces basidiomes. Fatty acid contents were similar in both comb categories, while bacterial genera Alistipes, Burkholderia, Sediminibacterium, and Thermus were dominant in all combs, with other genera more abundant in combs with Termitomyces basidiomes. Basidiomycota and Ascomycota were also identified in combs, with various Termitomyces species present but not abundantly in individual combs.

Comparative Genomics Reveals Prophylactic and Catabolic Capabilities of Actinobacteria within the Fungus-Farming Termite Symbiosis

Robert Murphy et al.

Summary: Actinobacteria, commonly found in Earth's ecosystems, play a role in plant decomposition and defense as defensive symbionts with animal hosts. Genome analysis of termite-associated Actinobacteria reveals high potential for antimicrobial and enzyme production, suggesting their importance in symbiotic relationships and plant biomass breakdown. Their metabolic potential and presence in termite systems indicate a significant role in the symbiosis.

Origin of symbiotic gut spirochetes as key players in the nutrition of termites

Gaku Tokuda

Summary: The symbiotic spirochetes in termite hind-guts have a mutualistic relationship with the host termites by producing acetate through CO2-reductive acetogenesis. Some termite spirochetes may have acquired the capability of CO2-reductive acetogenesis through horizontal gene transfer.
