The Investigation of Thymol Formulations Containing Poloxamer 407 and Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose to Inhibit Candida Biofilm Formation and Demonstrate Improved Bio-Compatibility

Enas Al-Ani et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of thymol to inhibit Candida biofilm formation and improve its biocompatibility with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and poloxamer 407 (P407) as drug carriers. Thymol showed concentration-dependent biofilm inhibition, and its inhibitory effect was enhanced when combined with HPMC. The Thymol-P407 combination completely inhibited biofilm formation, but its antibiofilm effect decreased as the Candida biofilms matured. Thymol had a significant negative effect on the viability of HEK 293 cells, but when P407 was present, the cell viability increased significantly. The thymol-P407 combination showed a superior inhibitory effect on biofilm formation and better biocompatibility with human cell lines, suggesting its potential for medical use in preventing Candida biofilm formation.

Design and Characterization of Agarose/HPMC Buccal Films Bearing Ondansetron HCl In Vitro and In Vivo: Enhancement Using Iontophoretic and Chemical Approaches

Umair Jillani et al.

Summary: The study aimed to design and characterize mucoadhesive buccal films containing ondansetron hydrochloride (OND) using agarose (AG), hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), and glycerol. The buccal delivery of OND was enhanced by iontophoresis and chemical penetration enhancers. The effects of different formulation components on various parameters and drug release were investigated. The results showed a linear release profile and the relationship between polymer content and drug release. Physicochemical interactions were analyzed and no chemical interactions were found. Permeation studies revealed enhanced flux with iontophoresis and chemical enhancers. Pharmacokinetic and pharmacological studies in animals showed improved bioavailability and reduced emesis events. Histopathological examinations demonstrated no severe negative effects.
