Molecular Evolution of Plant 14-3-3 Proteins and Function of Hv14-3-3A in Stomatal Regulation and Drought Tolerance

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular evolution, expression pattern, and physiological functions of 14-3-3 proteins in response to drought stress. The results demonstrate the highly conserved and early evolution of 14-3-3s in green plants and the duplication and expansion of 14-3-3s in angiosperms. The findings also highlight the crucial role of Hv14-3-3s in the rapid stomatal response to drought in barley. This research provides valuable evolutionary and molecular evidence for breeding drought-tolerant crops in a changing global climate.

Improving oxidative stress resilience in plants

Pavel Kerchev et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS), once considered harmful metabolic byproducts, are now seen as integral to cellular programs, activating signaling pathways that regulate plant growth, development, and defense. Adverse environmental conditions can lead to excessive ROS levels, causing oxidative stress and negative impacts on cellular components. Research efforts have focused on enhancing antioxidant mechanisms to improve oxidative stress resilience in both model and crop species.

Photosynthesis under fluctuating light in the CAM plant Vanilla planifolia

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photosynthetic dynamics of the CAM orchid Vanilla planifolia under fluctuating light. The results showed that the light use efficiency was higher in the morning compared to the afternoon. During photosynthetic induction, electron flow through photosystem I reached its maximum value rapidly. A rapid re-oxidation of P700 was observed upon transition from dark to actinic light, indicating the effective utilization of the water-water cycle. In the afternoon, cyclic electron flow was stimulated to optimize photosynthesis.

Evolution of rapid blue-light response linked to explosive diversification of ferns in angiosperm forests

Shengguan Cai et al.

Summary: The study found that modern ferns have faster stomatal response to blue light, which is linked to specific genes in the blue light signaling pathway. Cryptochromes in the Polypodiales underwent gene duplication events when angiosperms emerged, aiding modern ferns in thriving beneath angiosperm forest canopies.

Biochemical Basis for Redox Regulation of Chloroplast-Localized Phosphofructokinase from Arabidopsis thaliana

Keisuke Yoshida et al.

Summary: Various proteins in plant chloroplasts are regulated by thiol-based redox processes for light-responsive control. A specific form of phosphofructokinase (PFK), PFK5, is a novel redox-regulated protein that is suppressed upon reduction, while also being activated through oxidization by specific Trx proteins. This redox regulation of PFK5, together with other proteins like FBPase, plays a crucial role in switching light/dark metabolism in chloroplasts.

Summary: The adaptation to unfavorable abiotic stresses is crucial in plant evolution, with calcium (Ca2+) signaling playing a key role in integrating environmental stimuli and cellular responses. This review explores the mechanisms of Ca2+ membrane transporters and intracellular sensors, shedding light on the evolutionary and functional synergies in green plants. It provides new perspectives on the evolution, interaction, and integration of Ca2+ signaling components, with potential benefits for research in agriculture, evolutionary biology, ecology, and the environment.

Redox regulation of NADP-malate dehydrogenase is vital for land plants under fluctuating light environment

Yuichi Yokochi et al.

Summary: The redox regulation of enzyme activity through cysteine residues in chloroplasts is crucial for maintaining NADPH homeostasis under different light conditions. A mutation that eliminates a redox switch in chloroplast NADP-malate dehydrogenase results in severe growth retardation in plants under short-day or fluctuating light conditions, highlighting the importance of fine-tuning the activity of key enzymes for efficient photosynthesis.

Abiotic Stress and Reactive Oxygen Species: Generation, Signaling, and Defense Mechanisms

Summary: Climate change has devastating effects on plants, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as byproducts of oxygen consumption. While excessive ROS can disrupt cellular homeostasis, moderate levels can activate growth and stress responses in plants, though the exact mechanisms are not fully understood. Advancements in modern techniques like molecular priming and crop modeling offer potential solutions for managing ROS levels in plants under stress.

Coordination of Cyclic Electron Flow and Water-Water Cycle Facilitates Photoprotection under Fluctuating Light and Temperature Stress in the Epiphytic Orchid Dendrobium officinale

Hu Sun et al.

Summary: Photosystem I (PSI) is the main target of photoinhibition under fluctuating light (FL), and photosynthetic organisms use alternative electron flows to protect PSI under FL. The coordination of alternative electron flows under FL at different temperature stresses varies, with different responses observed in cyclic electron flow (CEF) and water-water cycle (WWC) at different temperatures. The findings indicate that CEF and WWC coordinate to protect PSI under FL at temperature stresses.
