Presence and significance of intestinal unicellular parasites in a morbidly obese population

J. Caudet et al.

Summary: Obese individuals frequently carry unicellular enteric parasites, which do not seem to cause clinical or nutritional harm. In fact, the presence of these parasites appears to have a beneficial effect, particularly on insulin resistance and possibly on the development of related comorbidities. Contrary to previous studies, colonization with parasite species is significantly associated with fewer abdominal symptoms and bowel movements per day.

The Influence of Obesity and Weight Loss on the Bioregulation of Innate/Inflammatory Responses: Macrophages and Immunometabolism

Isabel Galvez et al.

Summary: Obesity is associated with low-grade inflammation and increased susceptibility to viral infections, such as COVID-19. Macrophage immunometabolism and metabolic flexibility play a crucial role in this context. Strategies for regulating inflammatory responses while preserving innate defenses are important in obesity and inflammatory diseases. However, the effectiveness of dietary interventions in reducing inflammation, especially in adipose tissue, is still controversial and requires further research.

Obesity and Insulin Resistance Is the Component of the Metabolic Syndrome Most Strongly Associated with Oxidative Stress

Grzegorz K. Jakubiak et al.

Summary: Metabolic syndrome is the coexistence of factors that increase the risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and it is associated with oxidative stress. Among the components of metabolic syndrome, obesity and insulin resistance show the strongest association with oxidative stress.

The Impact of Obesity, Adipose Tissue, and Tumor Microenvironment on Macrophage Polarization and Metastasis

Ola Habanjar et al.

Summary: The inflammatory adipose microenvironment in obesity has a significant impact on cancer development and metastasis. This review focuses on adipocytes and macrophages, as well as the extracellular matrix, to explore the cellular and molecular mechanisms linking inflammation, obesity, and cancer. The roles of M1, M2, and tumor-associated macrophages in angiogenesis, invasion, metastasis, and immunosuppression are discussed, with a specific emphasis on the involvement of adipocytes. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms connecting inflammation, obesity, and cancer, with a focus on the roles of adipocytes and macrophages in the extracellular matrix.

Systemic Inflammation, Oxidative Stress and Cardiovascular Health in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review

Tjasa Hertis Petek et al.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that cerebrovascular diseases and atherosclerosis originate in childhood and are influenced by chronic inflammation. Oxidative stress has been linked to cardiovascular health in adults but has not been systematically reviewed in pediatric population. The results indicate that inflammation and oxidative stress affect cardiovascular health in chronic pediatric conditions, and exercise and diet can improve oxidative status and endothelial function, although the effectiveness of antioxidant supplementation remains unclear.

Summary: This study examines the interactions between gut prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities, metabolic comorbidities, and diet in obese individuals.
