Gut microbiota, dysbiosis and atrial fibrillation. Arrhythmogenic mechanisms and potential clinical implications

Monika Gawalko et al.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that imbalances in gut microbiota composition may contribute to atrial fibrillation (AF), a condition where the heart beats irregularly. The gut microbiota is a complex ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms that can be influenced by factors such as diet and drugs, in addition to individual characteristics. Research explores the potential bidirectional relationship between AF and gut microbiota, examining how the microbiota's metabolites could affect AF development. Additionally, investigations into modifying gut microbiota through pharmacological and dietary interventions are discussed as potential methods to prevent AF progression.

Association between Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis and the CHA2DS2-VASc Score in Atrial Fibrillation Patients

Chen Fang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the interaction between gut microbiota (GM) and functional patterns in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with different CHA2DS2-VASc scores to evaluate its potential as a biomarker for predicting stroke risk. The results showed that the diversity, composition, and function of gut microbiota differed between AF patients with high and low thromboembolic risk. In the high-risk group, the abundance of Prevotella, Lachnospiraceae, and Eubacterium rectale, which are related to the production of short-chain fatty acids and anti-inflammatory effects, was reduced. Additionally, the KEGG orthology-based approach exhibited a significant association with thromboembolic risk in AF patients.

Ferroptosis: a cell death connecting oxidative stress, inflammation and cardiovascular diseases

Yi Yu et al.

Summary: Ferroptosis is a newly identified iron-dependent cell death mechanism that differs from other cell death pathways, characterized by lipid peroxidation and accumulation of redox-active iron. Studies suggest that ferroptosis plays a crucial role in various cardiovascular diseases, and targeting ferroptosis may present a novel therapeutic approach in treating these conditions.

Gut microbiota in human metabolic health and disease

Yong Fan et al.

Summary: The intestinal microbiota plays a significant role in human metabolic health, potentially contributing to the development of common metabolic disorders when dysregulated. Current research is shifting towards cause-and-effect studies and utilizing high-throughput human multi-omics data to identify potential molecular mechanisms behind these associations.

Ferroportin-mediated ferroptosis involved in new-onset atrial fibrillation with LPS-induced endotoxemia

Jin Fang et al.

Summary: This study found significant activation of ferroptosis in a rat model of endotoxemia, as well as downregulation of ferroportin in the atrium, leading to increased vulnerability to AF. Inhibiting ferroptosis can alleviate AF vulnerability. The research reveals the important role of ferroportin-mediated ferroptosis in new-onset AF induced by sepsis.

Necroptosis is required for atrial fibrillation and involved in aerobic exercise-conferred cardioprotection

Yuping Fu et al.

Summary: Necroptosis is identified as a novel mechanism in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF), and aerobic exercise can confer benefits on AF by inhibiting cardiac necroptosis, thus reducing the risk of AF and improving cardiac structure.
