Function and therapeutic value of astrocytes in neurological diseases

Hong-Gyun Lee et al.

Summary: This review discusses astrocytes, a type of glial cell that is involved in various neurological diseases. Astrocytes regulate important processes in the central nervous system, such as glutamate and ion homeostasis, cholesterol and sphingolipid metabolism, and response to environmental factors. The review highlights the potential of targeting astrocytes for therapeutic intervention, including manipulating their metabolism and targeting transporters and receptors on astrocytes. The review also proposes a new nomenclature for astrocyte subsets to better understand their roles in neurological diseases.

Effects of corticosterone on BDNF expression and mood behaviours in mice

Liying Lin et al.

Summary: Corticosterone can induce depressive-like and anxiety-like behaviors in mice, as well as differential changes in proBDNF and mBDNF in various brain regions and peripheral tissues. ProBDNF may participate in the development of depressive behaviors in corticosterone-treated animals.

Experience and activity-dependent control of glucocorticoid receptors during the stress response in large-scale brain networks

Damien Huzard et al.

Summary: The diversity of actions of glucocorticoid stress hormones is influenced by various factors, but the heterogeneity of responses in the brain may be shaped by synchronized neural activity on large-scale brain networks. This communication between activity-dependent and glucocorticoid signaling pathways can help to adapt to the demands of the body and external world.

The Emerging Role of the Interplay Among Astrocytes, Microglia, and Neurons in the Hippocampus in Health and Disease

Daniele Lana et al.

Summary: Neurons have been traditionally considered the basic functional units of the brain, but during inflammaging and acute inflammation, astrocytes and microglia undergo transcriptional, functional, and morphological changes, transforming into cells with different properties and functions. Various cell populations in the brain interact in health and disease conditions, forming networks of morphological and functional reciprocal reliance and dependency. These interactions lead to alterations affecting one cell population and potentially influencing the activities of other cell populations.
