A critical role for GM1 ganglioside in the pathophysiology and potential treatment of Parkinson's disease

J. S. Schneider

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a slowly progressing neurodegenerative disorder affecting millions of patients worldwide, with no disease-modifying agent currently available to slow or stop its progression. Research suggests that GM1 ganglioside may have the potential to be a disease-modifying therapeutic for PD, and deficiencies in GM1 ganglioside could play a role in the pathogenesis of PD.

Mass spectrometry-based ganglioside profiling provides potential insights into Alzheimer?s disease development

Hua Li et al.

Summary: This study developed a mass spectrometry-based method for analyzing the types and quantities of gangliosides at low concentrations. The findings showed that acetylated and N-acetylgalactosaminylated ganglioside species were up-regulated, while major gangliosides were down-regulated in the development of Alzheimer's disease. Certain ganglioside species were identified as time-coursed biomarkers, and one ganglioside could be a potential candidate for early diagnosis of AD.

Immunomodulatory effects of new phytotherapy on human macrophages and TLR4-and TLR7/8-mediated viral-like inflammation in mice

Olesia Schapovalova et al.

Summary: A new immunomodulatory phytotherapy (IP) comprised of blackberry, chamomile, garlic, cloves, and elderberry extracts was studied as a potential low-cost solution against SARS-CoV-2 infection. The IP therapy was found to decrease inflammation and alleviate sickness behavior, suggesting its potency in combating the infection primarily through preventive effects.

The long and the short of Huntington's disease: how the sphingolipid profile is shifted in the caudate of advanced clinical cases

Gabrielle R. Phillips et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in sphingolipid species in the brains of Huntington's disease patients. They found that the caudate region had a shifted sphingolipid profile, favoring long-chain species over very-long-chain species. They also observed a reduced expression of ceramide synthase 1 in the caudate of Huntington's patients, which correlated with a younger age at death and a longer CAG repeat length.

Molecular causes of sex-specific deficits in rodent models of neurodevelopmental disorders

Adele Mossa et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that rodent models of NDDs exhibit sex-specific deficits, with males showing more severe behavioral outcomes in certain gene mutations and females presenting cellular and electrophysiological changes. Defects in different genes may lead to sex bias in NDDs due to the differential allocation of molecular and cellular functions between the two sexes.

Summary: This study identified prenatal cis-regulatory effects on gene expression in the human fetal brain associated with genetic risk for neuropsychiatric disorders, highlighting the role of altered gene regulation in susceptibility to these conditions. Pleiotropic effects of expression predictors were observed for various genes and transcripts, indicating potential risk genes for further neurobiological investigation.
