Sudden Rupture of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in COVID19 Patients

Antonio Bozzani et al.

Summary: This paper reports the clinical outcomes of 4 patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) during or immediately after moderate-severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study found that the AAA showed rapid growth in all 4 patients compared to previous scans. Therefore, family doctors and vascular surgeons should be aware of the possibility of AAA degeneration in patients with moderate-severe COVID-19 infection.

Prevalence, clinical features, risk factors, and outcomes of SLE patients with aortic aneurysm: a cross-sectional retrospective study in a Chinese single center

Ju Zhang et al.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence, clinical features, and outcomes of SLE patients with or without aortic aneurysm in a Chinese single-center cohort. The results showed that SLE patients with AA had a higher proportion of smoking and hypertension, as well as poorer clinical outcomes. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified long SLE duration and anti-RNP positivity as independent risk factors associated with AA occurrence in SLE patients. Additionally, SLE patients with AA had a significantly higher risk of progression to death, especially if they also had renal disorder.

Treatment with the Prolyl Hydroxylase Inhibitor JNJ Promotes Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Progression in Diabetic Mice

Jia Guo et al.

Summary: The dysregulated activity of PHD in diabetic patients may play a role in suppressing the progression of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). This study found that the use of a PHD inhibitor enhanced AAA progression and restored pathological features in diabetic mice, as well as in human AAA tissue. This finding is important for understanding the development and treatment of complications in diabetes.

Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of COVID-19

Yan Xie et al.

Summary: Individuals with COVID-19, even those who were not hospitalized during the acute phase of the infection, are at an increased long-term risk of various cardiovascular disorders. A study using national healthcare databases found that beyond the first 30 days after infection, individuals with COVID-19 have an elevated risk of developing cerebrovascular disorders, heart diseases, and other cardiovascular complications. The risk increases depending on the care setting during the acute phase.

Type I Interferons in Autoimmunity

Ruth Fernandez-Ruiz et al.

Summary: Dysregulated IFN-1 responses are important in the development of various autoimmune diseases. Enhanced IFN-1 signaling is seen in patients with lupus, systemic sclerosis, Sjogren's syndrome, and dermatomyositis. Excess IFN-1 is associated with disease severity and autoantibodies, and may be used to predict response to new therapies targeting IFN-1 pathways. This review provides an overview of IFN-1 signaling pathway and immune functions in both health and disease, as well as current therapeutic strategies targeting the IFN-1 system.

Long COVID after breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection

Ziyad Al-Aly et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the US Department of Veterans Affairs national healthcare databases to investigate the occurrence of Long COVID and death risk after breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection. The findings showed that vaccination significantly reduced the risk of death and post-acute sequelae but did not eliminate them completely. These results underscore the importance of further research on prevention and post-acute care for breakthrough infections.

Untuned antiviral immunity in COVID-19 revealed by temporal type I/III interferon patterns and flu comparison

Summary: Andreakos and colleagues conducted a study comparing patients with COVID-19 and influenza, finding that COVID-19 patients exhibited a dysregulated interferon response with diminished and delayed interferon production compared to flu patients. In COVID-19 patients, pro-inflammatory cytokines were produced before interferons and persisted longer, leading to worsened clinical outcomes.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 may influence AAA disease through various mechanisms, including ACE-angiotensin II-AT1 receptor activity, increased production of proaneurysmal mediators, cross-talk between viral targeted cells, and hypoxemia and systemic inflammatory tone during severe COVID-19 illness. Further research and clinical follow-up are needed to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on AAA disease.

Comprehensive investigations revealed consistent pathophysiological alterations after vaccination with COVID-19 vaccines

Jiping Liu et al.

Summary: Large-scale COVID-19 vaccinations are currently underway, causing consistent alterations in hemoglobin A1c, serum sodium and potassium levels, coagulation profiles, and renal functions in healthy volunteers. Single-cell mRNA sequencing also revealed changes in gene expression of immune cells, suggesting that vaccination mimics infection. Increased NF-kappa B signaling and reduced type I interferon responses were observed, indicating caution is needed when vaccinating individuals with pre-existing clinical conditions.

Summary: This study found that people living with HIV have a significantly higher risk of aortic aneurysms compared to uninfected individuals, with HIV status independently associated with this condition. Among PLWH, factors like age, obesity, and hepatitis B co-infection are associated with a higher risk of aortic aneurysms. Increased attention to this condition in PLWH may be beneficial.

Differential plasmacytoid dendritic cell phenotype and type I Interferon response in asymptomatic and severe COVID-19 infection

Summary: The study highlights the crucial role of pDC/type I IFN axis in defending against SARS-CoV-2 infection in COVID-19 patients, suggesting that a deeper understanding may aid in the development of new drug strategies and host-directed therapies. Moreover, the findings indicate that critically ill patients exhibit impaired type I IFN response and high levels of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, leading to multi-organ failure.

Recombinant Interleukin-19 Suppresses the Formation and Progression of Experimental Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

Hiroki Tanaka et al.

Summary: Interleukin-19, an immunosuppressive cytokine, was found to be upregulated in both human and experimental abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). Treatment with interleukin-19 suppressed aneurysm formation and progression in mice, while downregulating the expression of various inflammatory mediators. This suggests that interleukin-19 may play a significant role in the development and progression of AAAs.
