Epidemiological, clinical and virological characteristics of four cases of monkeypox support transmission through sexual contact, Italy, May 2022

Andrea Antinori et al.

Summary: Since May 2022, there has been an ongoing monkeypox outbreak in non-endemic countries. Four cases in young adult men in Italy, who engaged in condomless sexual intercourse, were reported. The patients are in good clinical condition and do not require specific antiviral drugs. Monkeypox viral DNA was detected in seminal fluid samples. The possibility of sexual transmission of monkeypox virus needs to be investigated.

Community transmission of monkeypox in the United Kingdom, April to May 2022

Roberto Vivancos et al.

Summary: Between 7 and 25 May, 86 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the UK, with only one case known to have traveled to a monkeypox virus endemic country. The majority of the cases were males, among which 66 reported being gay, bisexual, or men who have sex with men. This is the first sustained human-to-human transmission of monkeypox in the UK, occurring through close contacts, including sexual networks. Ongoing efforts are being made to improve case identification and prevent further transmission.

Clinical features and management of human monkeypox: a retrospective observational study in the UK

Hugh Adler et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively observed the clinical course of monkeypox in seven patients in the UK from 2018 to 2021. The study found that prolonged PCR positivity led to isolation of five patients for more than 3 weeks. Three patients treated with brincidofovir developed elevated liver enzymes, leading to termination of the therapy. One patient treated with tecovirimat experienced no adverse effects and had a shorter duration of viral shedding and illness compared to the other six patients.

Vaccination for the Prevention of Infection among Immunocompromised Patients: A Concise Review of Recent Systematic Reviews

Kay Choong See

Summary: Vaccination is crucial for immunocompromised patients but they respond less well to vaccines compared to healthy individuals. The efficacy of various vaccines varies among different immunocompromised states. Good vaccine responses were observed in patients with chronic kidney disease, HIV infection (normal CD4 counts), immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, post-splenectomy states, and solid tumors. Intermediate vaccine responses were seen in patients receiving anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 therapy, hematologic cancer, and HIV infection (low CD4 counts). Poor vaccine responses were observed in patients receiving B-cell-depleting agents, hematopoietic stem-cell transplant, solid organ transplant, and liver cirrhosis. It is recommended to time vaccinations when patients are least immunosuppressed.

Frequent detection of monkeypox virus DNA in saliva, semen, and other clinical samples from 12 patients, Barcelona, Spain, May to June 2022

Aida Peiro-Mestres et al.

Summary: A study found that saliva is the main source of virus detection in all cases during the monkeypox outbreak, and other samples such as rectal swabs, nasopharyngeal swabs, semen, urine, and feces were also frequently positive. These findings are important for understanding virus shedding and the possible role of bodily fluids in disease transmission.

Summary: An international monkeypox outbreak has occurred in over 50 countries since May 2022. Although most cases involve men who have sex with men, transmission is not limited to this population. This report presents the case of a male child under 10 years old with monkeypox in the Netherlands. Despite efforts to trace the source, the exact origin of the infection remains unknown. No secondary cases were found among close contacts.

Summary: This observational study focused on monkeypox cases in Madrid, Spain, and investigated the clinical and virological aspects of the disease. The findings revealed that the virus circulating in Spain belongs to the western African clade, mainly affecting cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM). The first symptom of the disease was skin lesions, and the disease followed a self-limited course.

Monkeypox 2022 outbreak: cases with exclusive genital lesions

Benjamin Davido et al.

Summary: The description of the 2022 monkeypox outbreak is mainly based on historical cases observed locally in Africa, along with rare imported cases in four other countries prior to the outbreak. This outbreak of orthopoxvirus seems to have a particularly high sexual transmission rate, possibly due to the prevalence of genital lesions.

Efficacy of biocidal agents and disinfectants against the monkeypox virus and other orthopoxviruses

G. Kampf

Summary: The number of human monkeypox virus infections is increasing in many countries. The main mode of transmission is direct contact. Disinfection may be necessary in the areas surrounding confirmed cases, as orthopoxviruses can remain infectious on inanimate surfaces for up to 42 days under laboratory conditions. This review evaluates published data on the antiviral efficacy of biocidal agents and disinfectants against monkeypox virus and other orthopoxviruses.

Phylogenomic analysis of the monkeypox virus (MPXV) 2022 outbreak: Emergence of a novel viral lineage?

Nicolas Luna et al.

Summary: Since May 13, 2022, there has been an increasing number of suspected and confirmed cases of monkeypox reported in non-endemic regions worldwide. Analysis of the virus genomes revealed three distinct clades, including a newly emerging clade from the 2022 outbreak. The surge in cases and widespread geographical spread suggest multiple factors driving the current outbreak dynamics.
