Multiscale finite element musculoskeletal model for intact knee dynamics

Liming Shu et al.

Summary: This study used a subject-specific musculoskeletal model and a high-accuracy intact finite element knee model to evaluate the kinematics and mechanics of an intact knee joint during the gait cycle. The results showed that internal rotation and parallel anterior translation are important movements for the normal function of the knee joint. Furthermore, the majority of the joint load is borne by the cartilage-cartilage contact, and there is significant contact pressure on the patellofemoral joint. These findings provide important theoretical foundations for the treatment of knee joint diseases and the design of knee prostheses.

A Computationally Efficient Lower Limb Finite Element Musculoskeletal Framework Directly Driven Solely by Inertial Measurement Unit Sensors

Sentong Wang et al.

Summary: Finite element musculoskeletal approaches using motion data can provide insight into the interactions between the knee joint kinematics, contact mechanics, and muscle forces. However, these approaches are computationally expensive and require expensive equipment. In this study, an FEMS model of the lower limb driven by IMU sensors was developed, combining tissue geometries, muscle modeling, and contact analysis. The model only requires input from angular velocities and accelerations measured by the sensors and predicts the outputs through iterative calculations.

Summary: This study provides a summary of tibio-femoral kinematics and loading scenarios from all six subjects for various activities, with a focus on peak loads and internal rotations. The CAMS-HIGH100 loads show similarities to previous studies but with the additional benefit of synchronized kinematics.

Influence of Menisci on Tibiofemoral Contact Mechanics in Human Knees: A Systematic Review

Matthias Sukopp et al.

Summary: The menisci play a crucial role in the knee joint by transferring axial loads and influencing tibiofemoral contact pressure (CP). Research shows that injured or resected menisci can significantly increase CP, and different test setups can lead to variations in CP measurements. Transparent and traceable in vitro testing conditions are essential for accurate comparisons in biomechanical investigations of CP in the knee joint.
