SoGut: A Soft Robotic Gastric Simulator

Yu Dang et al.

Summary: The human stomach breaks down and transports food through peristaltic contractions, which existing gastric simulators have not accurately replicated. A soft robotic gastric simulator (SoGut) has been developed to emulate these contractions realistically and demonstrate similar contracting force and amplitude as the human stomach. By coordinating the inflation sequence of multiple air chambers, SoGut can perform in vitro peristaltic contractions to massage and transport food contents, simulating the physiological motions of the human stomach for advanced digestion research.

RoSE: A Robotic Soft Esophagus for Endoprosthetic Stent Testing

Dipankar Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: Soft robotic systems are ideal for developing devices for biomedical applications. The RoSE, a bio-mimicking robotic soft esophagus, serves as an in vitro testing device for endoprosthetic stents to manage dysphagia. By implanting stents of different stiffness characteristics in the RoSE, the study investigates the pressure of stents on the esophageal wall and their impact on swallowing efficiency.

Device-Based Solutions to Improve Cardiac Physiology and Hemodynamics in Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction

Luca Rosalia et al.

Summary: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), characterized by rapidly increasing prevalence, elevated mortality and rehospitalization rates, has led to the development of device-based solutions to target its associated symptoms. Although promising results have been shown in studies, no device-based therapy has been approved for HFpEF treatment so far.

Cellular and molecular pathobiology of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction

Sumita Mishra et al.

Summary: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a complex multiorgan syndrome involving the heart, lungs, kidneys, skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, vascular system, and immune and inflammatory signaling. It is challenging to model in experimental animals due to its multiorgan involvement, but new animal models and efforts to examine human pathophysiology are revealing potential therapeutic targets. Research is focusing on cellular and molecular pathobiology of HFpEF, with efforts to understand mechanisms relevant to the heart as well as other organ systems, in order to develop more patient-specific therapies and improve clinical outcomes.

Object-Oriented Lumped-Parameter Modeling of the Cardiovascular System for Physiological and Pathophysiological Conditions

Luca Rosalia et al.

Summary: This work introduces a lumped-parameter Windkessel model that simulates biomechanical parameters of the cardiovascular system using an object-oriented platform in MATLAB-based SIMSCAPE. The model is validated by comparing predicted hemodynamics with normal physiology during systole and diastole, showcasing its potential in cardiovascular physiology research.

Global epidemiology of valvular heart disease

Sean Coffey et al.

Summary: Valvular heart disease (VHD) is a major cause of physical function loss, decreased quality of life, and shortened longevity. Rheumatic heart disease remains the most common manifestation of VHD globally, while calcific aortic stenosis and degenerative mitral valve disease are also significant. Despite improvements in mortality related to rheumatic heart disease, deaths from calcific aortic stenosis have increased over the past 20 years.
