The missing link of circularity in small breweries' value chains: Unveiling strategies for waste management and biomass valorization

Samuel Vinicius Bonato et al.

Summary: This article aims to identify sustainable strategies for waste management and biomass valorization in the value chain of small breweries. Findings from interviews with small breweries and industry experts reveal that breweries mainly dispose of by-products for animal feeding, without implementing other 21 reuse and recycling alternatives. The article introduces five new alternatives from companies and six from experts, as well as a conceptual model to facilitate waste management and biomass valorization. These findings provide new insights for overcoming challenges in waste management and biomass valorization in the sector.

Brewer's spent grains as biofuels in combustion-based energy recovery processes: Evaluation of thermo-oxidative decomposition

O. Gil-Castell et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the potential of brewer's spent grain (BSG) as biofuels for energy recovery processes. It analyzes the elemental composition, heating value, volatiles, fixed carbon, moisture, and ash yield of BSG, as well as its decomposition during thermo-oxidative combustion. The results show the feasibility of using pelletized BSGs as a renewable source of energy in incineration plants.

Bioeconomy - present status and future needs of industrial value chains

Manfred Kircher

Summary: The necessary reduction of greenhouse gas emissions requires a shift from fossil to renewable raw materials, accompanied by a reorganization of energy and manufacturing value chains. Sectors supporting cascade use and the circular economy will become more important, and the industrial realization of these value chains depends on legal framework conditions.

Summary: Circular economy is a sustainable strategy that requires reliable metrics and conditions for evaluating performance and achieving sustainable development. A study analyzing 609 scientific papers on waste management in Italy over the past 10 years found that some circular economy policies may lead to environmental gains, but these gains may be offset by rebound effects or social behavior.

Sustainable valorisation pathways mitigating environmental pollution from brewers' spent grains

Michael Kavalopoulos et al.

Summary: This study investigated valorisation pathways of brewers' spent grains (BSG) towards biofuels production under the biorefinery concept using experimental data. The recovery and utilization of used oil, bioethanol and biogas from BSG were thoroughly studied and optimized, leading to the establishment of three biorefinery scenarios capable of producing biodiesel, bioethanol and/or biogas. Material flow diagrams were utilized to evaluate these schemes, and it was found that BSG could significantly contribute to the biofuel energy strategy if fully valorized.
