Effects of environmental conditions and jellyfish blooms on small pelagic fish and fisheries from the Western Mediterranean Sea

Jose Carlos Baez et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between jellyfish blooms and the dynamics of anchovy and sardine populations in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The results show that jellyfish blooms have a negative impact on the abundance, biomass, and fitness of these fish species, in addition to changes in environmental conditions. This suggests that jellyfish blooms should be considered as a likely cause of change when analyzing small pelagic fish populations.

Effect of climatic oscillations on small pelagic fisheries and its economic profit in the Gulf of Cadiz

Jairo Castro-Gutierrez et al.

Summary: This study explored the impact of climatic oscillations on fisheries, specifically focusing on small pelagic fish. By analyzing different data models, it was found that there are relationships between climatic oscillations and the landings and prices of European anchovy and sardine. These relationships indirectly affect market prices through variations in catch, following the law of supply and demand.

Small pelagic fish fitness relates to local environmental conditions and trophic variables

E. Lloret-Lloret et al.

Summary: This study investigates the seasonal patterns of fish fitness for two important Mediterranean small pelagic fish species, the European anchovy and European sardine, along a latitudinal gradient in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. The results show spatial and temporal variations in terms of body condition, fat content, and reproduction indices, as well as stable isotopic values. Environmental variables, along with spatial and seasonal factors, mostly explain the variability in fitness for both species. This study provides insights into the interplay of the fitness of these commercial species and contributes to proactive fisheries management.

North Atlantic Oscillation and fisheries management during global climate change

Jose C. Baez et al.

Summary: The North Atlantic Oscillation is the most important large-scale climatic oscillation affecting the North Atlantic region, influencing meteorological parameters and the marine ecosystem. Its variability affects fisheries resources and yields, and can be further impacted by climate change altering the NAO pattern.

Evolving climate network perspectives on global surface air temperature effects of ENSO and strong volcanic eruptions

Tim Kittel et al.

Summary: This study differentiated between the global climate responses to ENSO and volcanic eruptions using climate network analysis. The results showed that strong ENSO episodes can cause a breakdown of the normal hierarchical organization of the global SAT field, while volcanic eruptions primarily have regional effects.
