Research on the treatment mechanism of anthraquinone dye wastewater by algal-bacterial symbiotic system

Yangyang Li et al.

Summary: The study found that in algal-bacterial symbiotic systems, the A system showed better performance in COD removal and decolorization of dyeing wastewater, with differing degradation pathways compared to the B system. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed a significant increase of Armatimonadetes in the A system, indicating the important role of algae in the initial degradation of anthraquinone dye.

Textile wastewater bioremediation using immobilized Chlorella sp. Wu-G23 with continuous culture

Jane-Yii Wu et al.

Summary: The immobilized microalga Chlorella sp. Wu-G23 was effectively utilized for bioremediation of textile wastewater, achieving significant removal efficiencies of COD, NH4+-N, and color. Optimal cultivation conditions included initial pH 10, supplemental urea at 1 g/L, and K2HPO4 at 8 mg/L without aeration.

Global water scarcity including surface water quality and expansions of clean water technologies

Michelle T. H. van Vliet et al.

Summary: Global water scarcity is influenced by both water quantity and quality issues, and increasing investment in clean water technologies is crucial to reduce the number of people affected. Considering water quality factors can raise the percentage of population suffering from severe water scarcity in heavily affected regions. Excessive water withdrawals and polluted return flows contribute to water scarcity and degraded water quality in severe water scarcity regions. Expanding desalination and treated wastewater reuse can effectively alleviate water scarcity levels in Asia, but potential side effects must be carefully considered.

Sustainable water resources through harvesting rainwater and the effectiveness of a low-cost water treatment

Samia Richards et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effectiveness of a rooftop rainwater harvesting system in reducing the pressure on groundwater supply at a public school in rural India. The stored rainwater quality and the application of low-cost treatment methods were assessed, indicating that chlorine dosing was effective in reducing microbial abundance over time. The results showed that the installed rainwater harvesting system has reduced water supply pressure by up to 25% with proper chlorination, allowing for greater savings and multiple uses of the stored water.

Is industrial pollution detrimental to public health? Evidence from the world's most industrialised countries

Mohammad Mafizur Rahman et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between health status and industrial pollution in the top 20 industrialised countries. It finds that industrial pollution has a detrimental impact on human health, while factors like economic growth, healthcare resources, urbanisation, sanitation facilities, and education can help reduce the death rate. Thus, the study suggests that effective policies to minimize industrial pollution should be a top priority to improve health outcomes in these countries.
