Numerical simulation of downwash airflow distribution inside tree canopies of an apple orchard from a multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sprayer

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed a CFD model to predict downwash airflow inside tree canopies and validated the model through experiments. The results showed that airflow velocity inside tree canopies is influenced by multiple factors. This research provides important references for the application of UAV sprayers in orchards.

The effect of fan setting, air-conveyor orientation and nozzle configuration on airblast sprayer efficiency: Insights relevant to trellised vineyards

Marco Grella et al.

Summary: This study identified the optimal configuration for a tower-shaped trailed sprayer in vertical shoot trellised vineyards through a step-by-step laboratory procedure. The effects of different fan settings, air-conveyor orientation, and nozzle configuration on airflow pattern and vertical spray distribution were tested. The results determined the optimal airflow rate and velocity pattern for different fan settings, as well as the ideal nozzle type and number of active nozzles for achieving the optimal vertical spray profile.

An electrical vortex air-assisted spraying system for improving droplet deposition on rice

Wei Qiu et al.

Summary: An electrical vortex air-assisted spraying system was developed to improve droplet deposition rates at the base of rice. Results showed that the system effectively guided droplets to the desired areas and increased droplet coverage on the front and back of leaves. Compared to traditional application methods, vortex air-assisted application significantly improved droplet coverage in rice canopy.

Research on Droplets Deposition Characteristics of Anti-Drift Spray Device with Multi-Airflow Synergy Based on CFD Simulation

Guiju Fan et al.

Summary: This paper presents a V-shaped anti-drift spray device with multi-airflow synergy to improve droplet deposition in the canopy of fruit trees. A droplet spatial motion model and an anti-drift mechanism based on particle dynamics analysis were constructed. The influences of spray pressure and V-shaped wind speed on droplet movement were investigated, and a simulation model of the flow field between the spray device and the fruit trees canopy was established using computational fluid mechanics (CFD). The results showed significant impact of the factors on droplet deposition characteristics, with V-shaped wind speed having the highest influence. The anti-drift experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of the device.

CFD simulation and measurement of the downwash airflow of a quadrotor plant protection UAV during operation

Yaozong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study used a 3D computational fluid dynamic model to investigate the flow characteristics and velocity distribution of the downwash airflow generated by a quadrotor plant protection UAV. The results showed that the horseshoe vortices below the rotors affected the droplet penetration performance. An optimal operating distance range between the UAV and the canopy was determined based on the variation law of the velocity distribution.

Blade pitch and air-outlet width effects on the airflow generated by an airblast sprayer with wireless remote-controlled axial fan

Ramon Salcedo et al.

Summary: This study aims to characterize the different air streams derived from combinations of two fan outlet section widths and three blade pitches. The outlet section and blade pitch were found to have a significant effect on velocity components, with outlet section width and blade pitch impacting airflow rate and velocity.

DOWNWIND SPRAY DRIFT ASSESSMENT FOR AIRBLAST SPRAYER APPLICATIONS IN A MODERN APPLE ORCHARD SYSTEM

A. P. Rathnayake et al.

Summary: The study found that the spray drift of airblast spray applications in orchards is significantly influenced by wind speeds, with less direct impact observed from temperature and humidity. Deposition levels varied at different locations within the orchard at different growth stages, and spray drift decreased with increasing distance.
