The Phaseolus vulgaris L. Yellow Bean Collection: genetic diversity and characterization for cooking time

Rie Sadohara et al.

Summary: The Yellow Bean Collection (YBC) consists of 295 genotypes from global sources to assess genetic and phenotypic diversity in yellow beans, grown in Michigan and Nebraska in the U.S. The genotypes exhibited wide diversity in cooking time, water uptake, and other traits, with more hardshell genotypes in NE and more fast-cooking genotypes in MI. SNPs associated with cooking time were identified, with a potential candidate gene on Pv04.

EBP-Colombia and the bioeconomy: Genomics in ethe service of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development

Joseph E. A. Huddart et al.

Summary: The 2016 Peace Agreement has increased access to Colombia's unique ecosystems, but they remain understudied and under threat. The Colombian government's National Bioeconomic Strategy aims to conserve biodiversity and achieve sustainability and peace. The Earth Biogenome Project's partnership with Colombia, known as EBP-Colombia, will accelerate technology adoption, promote collaboration, assist with conservation strategies, and encourage innovation in sectors like agriculture and tourism.

Seed coat color genetics and genotype x environment effects in yellow beans via machine-learning and genome-wide association

Rie Sadohara et al.

Summary: This study characterized and evaluated 295 yellow bean genotypes for seed appearance and postharvest darkening, identifying SNPs associated with seed color traits through genome-wide association analysis. Significant genotype x environment effects were observed, with seeds grown in Michigan showing darker colors compared to those grown in Nebraska. The machine-learning-aided model developed in this study could provide useful tools for future breeding and research efforts to meet consumer expectations for bean seed appearance.

Summary: This article examines early illustrations of common beans, maize, and squash and analyzes their characteristics. The author finds that some of these illustrations do not depict common beans but likely represent Old-World species. Additionally, the author studies illustrations of common beans from ten early herbals and identifies Middle American and Andean types. The findings provide important insights for researchers studying the origins, diversity, and distribution of common beans.

Environmental impact assessment - The range of activities covered and the potential of linking to post-project auditing

Zdenek Keken et al.

Summary: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a successful tool for managing and controlling dynamic development schemes. This study evaluates the numerical and type variability of projects included in EIA, with a focus on the links to post-project auditing. Specific types of projects were identified based on changes in legislation, allowing for recommendations on which projects to focus on when testing EIA accuracy.

Genome-Environment Associations, an Innovative Tool for Studying Heritable Evolutionary Adaptation in Orphan Crops and Wild Relatives

Andres J. Cortes et al.

Summary: This article reviews a novel interdisciplinary approach, genome-environment associations (GEAs), which combines ecological climate data with evolutionary genomics to accelerate prebreeding and discovery of genotypic sources of adaptation. This approach aims to increase genetic gain of abiotic stress tolerance in annual crops such as legumes and cereals. It emphasizes the need for updating GEA models, gathering genomic estimated adaptive values (GEAVs), and optimizing genomic prediction and machine learning models.

Allelic Diversity at Abiotic Stress Responsive Genes in Relationship to Ecological Drought Indices for Cultivated Tepary Bean, Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray, and Its Wild Relatives

Summary: The study suggests that wild tepary bean is a reservoir of novel alleles in genes for drought tolerance, as expected for a species that originated in arid environments. By comparing alleles of key genes with climate data estimates of drought tolerance indices, the genotype x environmental association of each gene was determined.

One CGIAR and the Integrated Agri-food Systems Initiative: From short-termism to transformation of the world's food systems

Bram Govaerts et al.

Summary: Agri-food systems are facing challenges such as malnutrition, yield gaps, and climate vulnerability, requiring integrated responses in policy, agriculture, value chains, and finance. The IASI methodology supports national efforts towards sustainable, equitable, and inclusive agri-food systems through multi-sector collaboration and design thinking. Investment in international institutions as 'innovation brokers' is needed to advance the adaptation and evolution of essential tools like IASI for positive transformation in agri-food systems.

Harnessing Crop Wild Diversity for Climate Change Adaptation

Andres J. Cortes et al.

Summary: Global warming and drought are reducing crop production, leading to potential global malnutrition. Plant genetics offer opportunities to increase yield and adaptability, but new strategies are needed to meet food demand. Recent 'big data' developments in genomics may help identify and breed crop varieties with the potential to feed humans, particularly in the face of abiotic stresses like heat and drought.
