Heavy metal accumulation in the surrounding areas affected by mining in China: Spatial distribution patterns, risk assessment, and influencing factors

Hongbo Liu et al.

Summary: Previous studies on heavy metal accumulation in mining affected areas mainly focused on individual or a few mining areas, lacking sufficient information for national-scale heavy metal control in soils. This study conducted a literature investigation and collected data from 263 published papers to evaluate heavy metal pollution, ecological risks, and health risks in the mining areas of China. The study also explored the spatial distribution patterns of heavy metals and their influencing factors. The results provide crucial information for heavy metal control in mining affected areas at the national scale.

Effect of different washing solutions on soil enzyme activity and microbial community in agricultural soil severely contaminated with cadmium

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Three commonly used washing agents showed moderate removal efficiencies for Cd in contaminated soil, with FC and EDTA washing being more beneficial for the restoration of biochemical functions. After washing, the Chaol index of bacteria increased and the microbial community structure changed.

Pollution Assessment and Source Apportionment of Soil Heavy Metals in a Coastal Industrial City, Zhejiang, Southeastern China

Shiyi Wang et al.

Summary: In this research, Ningbo City in southeastern China was studied to assess the status of soil heavy metal contamination and identify the sources of contamination. The results revealed that almost 70% of the area was polluted by heavy metals, with nickel, chromium, and zinc being the main enriched metals. Five sources were identified using the PMF model, including geological, atmospheric deposition, transportation emissions, mixed agriculture and industry, and mixed geology and industry. The Unmix model identified four sources, including mixed geology, agriculture, and industry; transportation emissions; geological; and mixed geology and industry. These findings hold practical significance for pollution source risk assessment and management.

Synergetic Efficacy of Amending Pb-Polluted Soil with P-Loaded Jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana) Twigs Biochar and Foliar Chitosan Application for Reducing Pb Distribution in Moringa Leaf Extract and Improving Its Anti-cancer Potential

Bilal Rasool et al.

Summary: Soil polluted from Pb-acid batteries effluents (SPB) can reduce the therapeutic potentials of Moringa oleifera and contaminate groundwater and surrounding soils. Amending SPB with P-loaded jujube twigs biochar (P-TB) can overcome these problems. Chitosan spray (CHs) on moringa growing on SPB can further stimulate the production of essential phytochemicals and improve its anti-proliferative effects on human liver cancer cells.

Aspergillus niger-mediated release of phosphates from fish bone char reduces Pb phytoavailability in Pb-acid batteries polluted soil, and accumulation in fenugreek

Hafiz Muhammad Tauqeer et al.

Summary: The study aimed to reduce phytoavailable lead concentration in soil from Pb-acid batteries dismantling units by using Aspergillus niger-mediated release of PO43- from fish bone products. The combination of A. niger with APII-C was the most effective treatment, significantly reducing lead phytoavailability in soil and plant uptake. The grain produced under this treatment was safe for human consumption and improved soil and plant quality parameters.

Tolerance of soil bacterial community to tetracycline antibiotics induced by As, Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Pb pollution

Vanesa Santas-Miguel et al.

Summary: The widespread use of heavy metals and antibiotics in livestock farming and their subsequent presence in agricultural soils pose significant problems for human health and the environment. This study investigated the tolerance and co-tolerance of bacterial communities in soils polluted with heavy metals and antibiotics. The findings suggest that bacterial communities in polluted soils exhibit increased tolerance and co-tolerance to both heavy metals and antibiotics, which has important implications for understanding the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes to human pathogens.

Use of waste materials to prevent tetracycline antibiotics toxicity on the growth of soil bacterial communities

Vanesa Santas-Miguel et al.

Summary: The addition of pine bark as a soil amendment can reduce the toxicity of tetracycline antibiotics on soil bacterial communities, but crushed mussel shell as a soil amendment is not effective in preventing antibiotic toxicity.
