Effects of organic fertilization on functional microbial communities associated with greenhouse gas emissions in paddy soils

Xinxin You et al.

Summary: Soil microbial communities and their byproducts, including greenhouse gases, are influenced by organic fertilization in paddy soil ecosystems. This study evaluated the effects of organic fertilization on soil nutrients and functional microorganisms associated with GHG emissions. The results showed that organic fertilization increased soil organic matter, carbon, and nitrogen, as well as the richness of methanogenic communities. Methanogenic communities were more sensitive to changes in soil properties compared to nitrifying bacterial communities. Organic fertilization directly affected both methanogenic communities and nitrifying bacterial communities, thereby accelerating methane emissions. The study provides insights for mitigating GHG emissions in paddy soil agroecosystems.

Paddy-upland rotation with Chinese milk vetch incorporation reduced the global warming potential and greenhouse gas emissions intensity of double rice cropping system

Chuan Zhong et al.

Summary: The study found that the Chinese milk vetch-rice-sweet potato parallel to soybean cropping system significantly reduces CH4 emissions but increases N2O emissions. Paddy-upland rotation decreases soil CH4 emissions but increases N2O emissions. The interaction between Chinese milk vetch incorporation and paddy-upland rotation enhances N2O emissions and soil nitrate content.

Combination of Compost and Mineral Fertilizers as an Option for Enhancing Maize (Zea mays L.) Yields and Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions from a Nitisol in Ethiopia

Gebeyanesh Worku Zerssa et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of different ratios of biowaste compost and mineral fertilizers on maize yields and greenhouse gas emissions in Nitisols in Ethiopia. The results suggest that compost accounting for 40 to 70% of the fertilizer combinations can increase maize yields and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
