Examining the synergistic effect of cocoa-plantain intercropping system on gross margin: A system dynamics modelling approach

Joshua Aboah et al.

Summary: The study examines the synergistic effect of cocoa-plantain intercropping system on farmers' gross margin in Ghana. Results show that increasing farm size allocation for the intercrop leads to higher gross margin. Adopting good agricultural practices and choosing complementary intercrops with lower production costs can also enhance the synergistic effect of intercropping.

Close mixed-planting with paddy rice reduced the flooding stress for upland soybean

Morio Iijima et al.

Summary: Close mixed-planting is a new method of mixed cropping that allows for greater complementarity between two plant species through their tightly intertwined root systems, facilitating the transfer of oxygen and/or water. In this study, it was found that rice planted as a companion crop to soybeans can alleviate short-term flood stress and enhance soybean growth. The survival rates, photosynthetic rates, and biomass production were higher in the mixed soybean plants compared to single soybean plants.

Does the Use of an Intercropping Mixture Really Improve the Biology of Monocultural Soils?-A Search for Bacterial Indicators of Sensitivity and Resistance to Long-Term Maize Monoculture

Agnieszka Wolinska et al.

Summary: The choice of appropriate agricultural practices has a significant impact on soil quality, crop productivity, and soil microbial community. This study compared the effects of maize monoculture and intercropping on soil properties and bacterial diversity. The results showed that intercropping had a positive effect on soil features and increased the richness and diversity of soil bacteria at the taxonomic level of genera.

Intercropping Practices in Mediterranean Mandarin Orchards from an Environmental and Economic Perspective

Bernardo Martin-Gorriz et al.

Summary: Crop diversification is important for soil and ecosystem health, and this study shows that intercropping herbaceous crops with mandarin trees can have positive environmental and economic impacts. The study found that the integration of intercrops did not have any detrimental effects on resource depletion, acidification, eutrophication, or global warming. Moreover, the correct choice of intercrops can reduce market risks for farmers.

Promoting sustainable change of smallholders' agriculture in Africa: Policy and institutional implications from a socio-economic cross-country comparative analysis

Giacomo Branca et al.

Summary: The research finds that investment-ready and food-secure small producers are more willing to adopt agricultural technology options, and increased access to financial services is crucial to enhance farm households' value-chain readiness. Policy interventions promoting pluralistic extension service expansion and enhancing access to stable input and output markets are incentivizing adoption. The heterogeneous nature of the smallholder farming environment in Eastern and Southern Africa suggests that sustainable agricultural systems should be based on technology packages adapted to the complexity and diversity of smallholders' farming systems.

Effect of Maize (Zeal mays) and Soybean (Glycine max) Intercropping on Yield and Root Development in Xinjiang, China

Wenwen Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of intercropping patterns on the growth, yield, root morphological characteristics, and interspecific competition of maize and soybean. The results show that intercropping maize increases plant height and root length density, while intercropping soybean decreases plant height. Maize is the dominant species, and changing planting methods can increase yield.

Southeast Asia must narrow down the yield gap to continue to be a major rice bowl

Shen Yuan et al.

Summary: Southeast Asia is a major rice-producing region, but there are significant yield gaps among countries. Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines, and Thailand have relatively large exploitable yield gaps, while Indonesia and Vietnam have smaller gaps. To ensure a large rice surplus in the future, it is important to substantially narrow down the exploitable yield gap within the next 20 years.

How Does Maize-Cowpea Intercropping Maximize Land Use and Economic Return? A Field Trial in Bangladesh

Ayesa Akter Suhi et al.

Summary: Intercropping of maize with cowpea can provide various benefits, but the planting techniques and time lag between sowing dates can affect crop growth and yield. In a field trial in Bangladesh, it was found that intercropping maize three weeks after cowpea resulted in higher below-canopy photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), but intercropping on the same day led to a higher leaf area index (LAI) for both maize and cowpea. Intercropping had higher land equivalent ratio compared to sole cropping, especially when maize was planted three weeks later. However, the overall maize yield was reduced due to competition for resources.

Assessing Opportunities to Increase Yield and Profit in Rainfed Lowland Rice Systems in Indonesia

Erythrina Erythrina et al.

Summary: The study aimed to improve rice farmers' productivity and profitability in rainfed lowlands of Indonesia by closing the yield gap during the dry season. By comparing recommended practices with farmers' current practices, the research found that implementing improved varieties and nutrient management, along with water reservoir infrastructure and information access, significantly increased rice yield and net returns. This suggests there is potential to increase rice production in rainfed lowlands through appropriate crop and nutrient management, supplemental irrigation, and reducing the yield gap.

Intercropping-Evaluating the Advantages to Broadacre Systems

Uttam Khanal et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the main existing metrics used to assess intercropping systems, discussing their strengths and limitations. It proposes robust metrics for characterizing intercropping systems, but also highlights limitations such as assuming same management level between intercropping and monocropping systems, and not considering differences in costs of production. The paper recommends four metrics for evaluating intercropping advantage, taking into account all important differences in private costs and benefits between intercropping and monocropping systems.
