Manure applications combined with chemical fertilizer improves soil functionality, microbial biomass and rice production in a paddy field

Anas Iqbal et al.

Summary: This study conducted a 2-year field experiment to explore optimal fertilizer management strategies in paddy fields using a combination of chemical and organic fertilizers. The results showed that the combined fertilizers application significantly increased soil enzyme activities, microbial biomass, and rice yield, indicating a potential improvement in soil functionality and sustainability.

Humic Acids Incorporated into Urea at Different Proportions Increased Winter Wheat Yield and Optimized Fertilizer-Nitrogen Fate

Shengchao Gao et al.

Summary: This study found that the addition of humic acids (HAs) to urea fertilizers can enhance the yield and nitrogen uptake of winter wheat, while reducing nitrogen loss from soil. The optimal proportion of HAs in the fertilizer was found to be 0.5%, which resulted in the highest increase in economic benefit.

Rethinking application of animal manure for wheat production in China

Yonghua Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on China's wheat production and a large-scale farmer survey to investigate the effects of animal manure applications. The research found that although using manure can increase soil organic carbon and wheat yield, the low manure-use rate is mainly due to low economic profits. Policies and investment incentives that increase economic profits and minimize environmental costs will be crucial to facilitate the widespread use of manure in wheat production.

A steady-state N balance approach for sustainable smallholder farming

Yulong Yin et al.

Summary: Research has shown that by using the long-term steady-state nitrogen balance approach, it is possible to reduce nitrogen fertilizer use while maintaining or increasing crop yields, thus contributing to the global nitrogen sustainability of smallholder agriculture.
