Growth and Antioxidant Responses of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) to Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Inoculation and Seaweed Extract Foliar Application

Farzad Rasouli et al.

Summary: The study found that the co-application of arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) and seaweed extract (SWE) can promote the growth and antioxidant potential of lettuce plants. The co-application resulted in the highest growth parameters and biochemical traits, as well as increased total antioxidant activity, ascorbic acid, total phenolics, and flavonoids content compared to the control.

A Sustainable Intercropping System for Organically Produced Lettuce and Green Onion with the Use of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Inocula

Eleni Papoui et al.

Summary: The effects of two types of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inocula on lettuce and green onion were examined. The AMF inoculation did not significantly affect the yield and root system architecture of the crops. Nitrate accumulation was within the limits set by the European Commission. However, important phytochemical characteristics and antioxidant capacity showed a tendency for reduced values in the AMF-treated lettuce.

Summary: Seaweed fertilizer, as a natural plat growth accelerator, can enhance the growth and root morphology of peanuts. Particularly, the two-mixed enzymes enzymatic liquid fertilizer significantly increases photosynthesis, leaf chlorophyll content, main stem height, lateral branch length, and dry matter accumulation in peanuts. Cellulase enzymatic liquid fertilizer has a better promotion effect on peanut root morphology.

The Protective Biochemical Properties of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Extraradical Mycelium in Acidic Soils Are Maintained throughout the Mediterranean Summer Conditions

Jorge M. S. Faria et al.

Summary: In acidic soils with manganese toxicity, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can enhance plant host growth by improving nutrition and protecting against environmental stress. The intact extraradical mycelium (ERM) of AMF can survive Mediterranean summer conditions and provide earlier colonization of winter crops. Wheat colonization by intact ERM decreased shoot Mn concentration while increasing the proportion of Mn in the apoplast, suggesting an important role of Mn-superoxide dismutase activity in AMF-mediated mitigation of Mn toxicity.

Application of garlic allelochemicals improves growth and induces defense responses in eggplant (Solanum melongena) against Verticillium dahliae

Muhammad Ali et al.

Summary: The study showed that aqueous garlic extracts and garlic allelochemical diallyl disulfide can enhance eggplant seedlings' defense against Verticillium dahliae by activating antioxidant enzymes, increasing chlorophyll content, altering the photosynthesis system, and accumulating plant hormones. The treated plants exhibited a lower disease severity index and were able to successfully encounter pathogen attacks, showing potential for garlic-derived bioactive compounds to improve plant growth and defense responses in protected horticultural environments.

Mobilization and transfer of nine macro-and micronutrients to Pinus greggii seedlings via arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi

Alicia Franco-Ramirez et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are able to establish, mobilize, and transfer nutrients in Pinaceae plants, indicating a more complex mycorrhizal symbiosis than previously believed. The mobilization and transfer of macro- and micronutrients, including N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, and B, to Pinus greggii were observed after inoculation with different AMF consortia. Advanced root colonization percentages and nutrient transfer effects were observed, particularly with the pine forest AMF consortium.

Evaluation of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) Production under Hydroponic System: Nutrient Solution Derived from Fish Waste vs. Inorganic Nutrient Solution

Zienab F. R. Ahmed et al.

Summary: The study found that lettuce grown in organic nutrient solution had lower overall growth and fresh biomass compared to inorganic nutrient solution, but had significantly higher chlorophyll, carotene, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and antioxidant activity. Stomatal density was higher in lettuce grown in inorganic nutrient solution. Leaf nutrient content at harvest was significantly influenced by the type of fertilizer used. Further improvements are needed for organic liquid fertilizer derived from fish waste in hydroponic systems to achieve optimal growth and yield comparable to conventional inorganic nutrient solutions.

A commercial arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculum increases root colonization across wheat cultivars but does not increase assimilation of mycorrhiza-acquired nutrients

Ashleigh J. Elliott et al.

Summary: Arable agriculture requires sustainable solutions to reduce dependence on large nutrient fertilizer inputs while enhancing crop yields. Utilizing arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis shows promise in improving crop nutrient uptake and growth without additional inputs, although the effectiveness of commercially available mycorrhizal inoculants in agricultural systems remains debatable.
