Max Ernst's Woman, Old Man, and Flower (1923-24): Four Paintings in One Revealed by Technical Imaging

Ana Martins et al.

Summary: The analysis of Max Ernst's painting "Woman, Old Man, and Flower" using various techniques revealed three distinct paintings concealed underneath the final composition, including an intermediate composition and two additional states. This study broadened our understanding of the painting and Ernst's collage-like pictorial development, while also proposing a list of pigments based on elemental information.
