A high-starch vs. high-fibre diet: effects on the gut environment of the different intestinal compartments of the horse digestive tract

Federica Raspa et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of high-starch and high-fiber diets on the horse gut environment. The results showed that a high-starch diet increased dry matter content in the right dorsal colon, reduced particle sizes, and increased the production of valeric acid. Therefore, fiber-based diets should be chosen to maintain gut health in horses.

Judgement bias of group housed gestating sows predicted by behavioral traits, but not physical measures of welfare

Kristina M. Horback et al.

Summary: Judgement bias testing is a potential tool for assessing affective states in animals by observing their responses to ambiguous stimuli. Recent studies have shown that behavioral traits such as aggressiveness can influence an animal's performance in these tests, while physical health measures have no significant impact. These findings highlight the complexity of factors that contribute to an animal's affective state and suggest the need for complementary measures and personality assessments in future research.

Does Feeding Management Make a Difference to Behavioural Activities and Welfare of Horses Reared for Meat Production?

Federica Raspa et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of two feeding management systems on the behavioural activities and subsequent welfare of horses reared for meat production. The findings suggest that feeding horses a fibre-based diet improves horse welfare and farming economics.

Housing and personality effects on judgement and attention biases in dairy cows

Louise Kremer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of personality and housing conditions on dairy cattle affective states, finding that personality influenced responses to JBT and ABT under reference conditions. Surprisingly, housing conditions did not have a significant impact on responses, suggesting a need for further research to confirm the validity and repeatability of JBT and ABT as appropriate measures of affective states in dairy cows.

Is there a bias in spatial maze judgment bias tests? Individual differences in subjects? novelty response can affect test results

Veridiana Jardim et al.

Summary: Judgment bias tests are important tools in assessing animals' affective states. The response to ambiguous cues may be biased by animals' perception of novelty in spatial settings, which can affect the interpretation of results obtained under such conditions.
