Antimicrobial defenses of table eggs: Importance of antibacterial proteins in egg white as a function of hen age in an extended production cycle

Ylenia Jabalera et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the importance of natural defences in eggs for preventing bacterial contamination and their relationship with hen age. The concentrations of lysozyme and ovotransferrin in egg-white play important roles in modulating bacterial survival, depending on the protein concentration, hen age, and line. Older hens produce eggs with higher concentrations of antimicrobial proteins, which are less prone to contamination by Salmonella.

Campylobacter spp. prevalence and fluoroquinolone resistance in chicken layer farms

Yoshimasa Sasaki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter spp. in 47 layer farms in Japan. The results showed that Campylobacter spp. were widely distributed in these farms, and some isolates exhibited resistance to commonly used antibiotics. There were differences in the ciprofloxacin resistance rate between different age groups of chickens.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of Campylobacter and antimicrobial resistance in layer hens and eggshells in Tunisia. The results showed a high occurrence rate of Campylobacter infection and widespread multidrug resistance. These findings highlight the importance of establishing a surveillance strategy to control the spread of resistant strains and protect consumer health.

Molecular Survey and Identification of Campylobacter spp. in Layer Farms in Central Ethiopia

Behailu Assefa Wayou et al.

Summary: Data on the presence of Campylobacter spp. in chickens in Ethiopia are scarce. A sampling activity was conducted in layer farms in Bishoftu and Mojo, Central Ethiopia, to assess the presence of Campylobacter spp. The majority of farms were found to be positive for Campylobacter spp., regardless of farm and flock size, age and hybrid types of the birds, and antimicrobial treatment. Campylobacter jejuni was the most commonly identified species in chickens, while C. avium and C. helveticus were newly reported in Ethiopia, indicating the need for monitoring the variability of this pathogen in light of its public health significance.

Approaches to prevent and control Campylobacter spp. colonization in broiler chickens: a review

Mohamed E. Abd El-Hack et al.

Summary: Campylobacter, a Gram-negative bacteria, is the main cause of acute bacterial enteritis in humans, mainly transmitted through contaminated chicken meat. Prevention and reduction of Campylobacter colonization in poultry farms can help cut off infection transmission routes, leading to increased research in natural and safe alternatives in the future.

Interrelationship between climatic factors and incidence of FBD caused by Clostridioides difficile toxin B, Clostridium perfringens, Campylobacter spp., and Escherichia coli O157:H7

Eun Ju Oh et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of climate factors on the incidence and severity of foodborne diseases, finding positive correlations between certain pathogens and variables such as sunshine intensity, wind-chill temperature, relative humidity, and particulate matter content. The findings may help predict relationships among climatic factors and inform environmental health policies, but further research involving large-scale data, molecular biology, and epidemiology is needed for effective prevention and management of foodborne bacterial infections.

Summary: The study evaluated antimicrobial susceptibility of commensal bacteria in Spanish laying hens, finding varying levels of resistance, with some strains showing resistance to key drugs used in human medicine. This highlights the potential public health risk posed by laying hens as a source of antimicrobial resistance for humans.

Bacteraemia, antimicrobial susceptibility and treatment among Campylobacter-associated hospitalisations in the Australian Capital Territory: a review

Cameron R. M. Moffatt et al.

Summary: This study investigated Campylobacter-associated hospitalisations from 2004 to 2013, finding a small proportion of patients with bacteremia, antibiotic treatment, and isolates non-susceptible to standard antimicrobials. Factors such as age, underlying comorbidities, and isolate resistance were identified as important factors influencing patient management.

Long-Term Grow-Out Affects Campylobacter jejuni Colonization Fitness in Coincidence With Altered Microbiota and Lipid Composition in the Cecum of Laying Hens

Hiroshi Asakura et al.

Summary: The study investigated the temporal dynamics of Campylobacter jejuni in the cecum of laying hens over 40 weeks, with possible alteration of gut microbiota and fatty acid components. Results showed that the presence of C. jejuni in the cecum of laying hens exhibited a certain time course, potentially related to changes in gut microbiota and fatty acid components.
