Effects of maternal high-energy diet and spirulina supplementation in pregnant and lactating sows on performance, quality of carcass and meat, and its fatty acid profile in male and female offspring

R. Lugara et al.

Summary: This study found a sex-specific programming effect on offspring growth in response to maternal spirulina intake, but high energy intake had no effect. Spirulina intake did not affect meat quality, but it may improve the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acids in offspring meat.

Using Nutritional Strategies to Shape the Gastro-Intestinal Tracts of Suckling and Weaned Piglets

Anne M. S. Huting et al.

Summary: Piglet mortality and morbidity in large litters are a major welfare concern and economic losses globally. Nutritional interventions before and after weaning can modulate gut development, reducing the risk of gastro-intestinal problems. Early-life nutrition has the potential to modulate gut health in the long-term.

Maternal Supplementation with Polyphenols and Omega-3 Fatty Acids during Pregnancy: Prenatal Effects on Growth and Metabolism

Ana Heras-Molina et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of a dietary supplementation combining hydroxytyrosol and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on prenatal development and metabolic traits in swine, a model of intrauterine growth restricted pregnancies. Results showed that treated sows had larger litters with smaller fetuses, but better development of major organs. Fetuses from the treated group displayed improved glycemic and lipidic indexes, although no effects were found on antioxidant profiles. Further research is needed to fully understand the implications of the treatment on both prenatal and postnatal development.
