Burst-and-coast swimming is not always energetically beneficial in fish (Hemigrammus bleheri)

Intesaaf Ashraf et al.

Summary: The study found that the primary purpose of burst-and-coast swimming in rummy nose tetra fish may be related to improved sensing ability and the likely existence of a minimum tail-beat frequency, rather than energy conservation. Using sinusoidal traveling waves to generate intermittent and continuous kinematics results in comparable power requirements for the two swimming modes.
