Effect of Different Water Cooling Treatments on Changes in Rectal and Surface Body Temperature in Leisure Horses after Medium-Intensity Effort

Iwona Janczarek et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of various water cooling methods on horses after medium-intensity exercise. The results showed that cooling the lower body parts with cold water was the most efficient method and can be recommended for practical use.

Effect of Pen Size on Stress Responses of Stall-Housed Horses Receiving One Hour of Daily Turnout

Jessica K. Suagee-Bedore et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different pen sizes on group turnout behaviors and physiological indicators of horses. The results suggest that providing a minimum of 342 m(2) per horse in group turnout situations may reduce the risk of injury and improve social interactions among horses.

Air Speed to Increase Rate of Cool Out for Horses After Intense Exercise

Staci McGill et al.

Summary: Cooling out horses after intense exercise is a common practice to ensure their physiologic responses return to baseline as quickly as possible. The use of water in cool out provides the greatest potential for removing heat from the animals.

Horse Preferences for Insolation, Shade or Mist Curtain in the Paddock under Heat Conditions: Cardiac and Behavioural Response Analysis

Iwona Janczarek et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine horses' preferences for different environmental conditions in paddocks under heat, and found that horses did not show clear preferences between sun-exposed, shaded, and mist-sprayed areas. Horses did not exhibit symptoms of overheating while in the sun, and were more relaxed in sun-exposed and mist-sprayed areas compared to shaded areas. The free choice of areas in paddocks may help horses maintain body temperature and emotional arousal at similar levels.

Dynamic changes in blood immune cell composition and function in Holstein and Jersey steers in response to heat stress

Da Som Park et al.

Summary: The study revealed that immune cell proportions and functions in Holstein and Jersey steers were altered under heat stress conditions, indicating that changes in blood immunological profiles may contribute to the increased susceptibility of heat-stressed steers to diseases. Additionally, breed-specific differences were observed in the expression of certain immune-related genes, highlighting the importance of understanding the immune responses of different cattle breeds under heat stress.
