Urbanization and aridity mediate distinct salinity response to floods in rivers and streams across the contiguous United States

Summary: This study examines the effects of floods on salinity by analyzing long-term observational records of daily streamflow and specific conductance in 259 monitoring sites across the United States. The results show that salinity changes during flood events exhibit large variability, with dilution being the prevailing mechanism. The analysis also reveals that the antecedent conditions of salinity prior to the flood are the most important factor in explaining intra-site variability.

Economic Dependence and Vulnerability of United States Agricultural Sector on Insect-Mediated Pollination Service

Summary: Deficits in insect-mediated pollination service have significant impacts on ecosystem biodiversity, human nutrition, and economic welfare. The economic value dependent on pollination service in the United States totaled $34.0 billion in 2012, with 20% of counties producing 80% of the total economic value. The decline in global pollinator supply poses challenges for sustainable production of key agricultural crops. The results of this study can help inform future conservation efforts for managed and wild pollinator populations.

Fewer butterflies seen by community scientists across the warming and drying landscapes of the American West

Summary: Uncertainty remains regarding the role of anthropogenic climate change in declining insect populations, partly because our understanding of biotic response to climate is often complicated by habitat loss and degradation among other compounding stressors. We found a 1.6% annual reduction in the number of individual butterflies observed over the past four decades, associated in particular with warming during fall months. The pervasive declines that we report advance our understanding of climate change impacts and suggest that a new approach is needed for butterfly conservation in the region, focused on suites of species with shared habitat or host associations.
