Riverscape approaches in practice: perspectives and applications

Christian E. Torgersen et al.

Summary: Over the past 30 years, landscape perspectives in riverine ecology have become increasingly popular, leading to the development of various approaches for conceptualizing, mapping and understanding 'riverscapes'. These perspectives now guide principles and approaches in inland fisheries and watershed management, with scientific literature on riverscapes growing rapidly in the last two decades, indicating their importance in freshwater science and management. The use of high-resolution, spatially intensive techniques in mapping physical and biological characteristics of rivers and floodplains has improved understanding of spatial patterns at various scales, essential for successful management of river ecosystems and implementation of conservation programs.

Short-lived species move uphill faster under climate change

Josephine Couet et al.

Summary: Climate change is causing species to shift towards poles and mountain tops, and a study on bird abundances in the Scandinavian mountains over 13 years found a clear pattern of uphill shift in bird abundance, with short-lived species showing more pronounced shifts.

Evolutionary principles and genetic considerations for guiding conservation interventions under climate change

Juan D. Gaitan-Espitia et al.

Summary: Climate change has had apparent impacts on natural systems worldwide, leading many species to struggle to survive in changing environments. Traditional conservation efforts focusing on genetic diversity have shifted towards more active interventions such as protected areas, rewilding, and genetic engineering in order to address the rapid loss of biodiversity.

Insects and recent climate change

Christopher A. Halsch et al.

Summary: Insects have adapted to Earth's changing climate over millions of years, but recent climate change and anthropogenic pressures pose new challenges. Research shows that the impact of climate change on insects can be significant compared to changes in land use. A case study on butterflies in Northern California highlights the complexity of montane-adapted insects responding to changing abiotic conditions.

Shifts in global bat diversity suggest a possible role of climate change in the emergence of SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2

Robert M. Beyer et al.

Summary: Bats are likely the origin of several coronaviruses that infect humans, with climate change driving an increase in bat richness in regions such as southern China, Myanmar, and Laos, potentially playing a key role in the evolution or transmission of SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2.

Global Patterns and Drivers of Bee Distribution

Michael C. Orr et al.

Summary: The study shows that publicly accessible records are sparse, especially from developing countries, and are frequently inaccurate, suggesting different biodiversity patterns from checklist data. Global analysis reveals hotspots of species richness that generate a rare bimodal latitudinal richness gradient. Xeric areas, solar radiation, and non-forest plant productivity are among the most important global drivers of bee biodiversity.

Vulnerability of global biodiversity hotspots to climate change

Brittany T. Trew et al.

Summary: The review highlights the importance of climatic processes in shaping biodiversity hotspots and emphasizes the need to consider spatio-temporal variability in climate for vulnerability assessments. It suggests that fine-scale spatial variability and stability in climate may buffer some hotspots from future changes, while others with more variable climates may have greater resilience. Higher-resolution forecasts are necessary to inform conservation strategies and address the physiological responses of organisms to climate variability.

Integrating ecosystem services into sustainable landscape management: A collaborative approach

D. P. S. Terencio et al.

Summary: The Paiva River basin in Portugal faces pressures related to land use disturbances, but stakeholders have identified priority areas for intervention to improve biodiversity, sustainability, and ecosystem services. Key solutions include riparian vegetation recovery, conservation and reforestation of native forest, and fuel management strips. It is crucial to involve local communities and entities in conservation projects to combine scientific knowledge with local experience. This project can serve as a flexible methodology model for hydrographic basins worldwide.

Endemism increases species' climate change risk in areas of global biodiversity importance

Stella Manes et al.

Summary: The study indicates that climate change will have adverse impacts in areas rich in biodiversity, with endemic species being disproportionately affected. Endemic terrestrial species are projected to be 2.7 and 10 times more impacted than non-endemic natives and introduced species respectively. Doubling of warming is projected to increase extinction risks disproportionately for endemic and non-endemic native species, highlighting the need for adaptation actions and enhanced climate change mitigation in biodiversity-rich areas.
