Changes pattern in the population and economic gravity centers since the Reform and Opening up in China: The widening gaps between the South and North

Longwu Liang et al.

Summary: Since the Reform and Opening up, regional development gaps in China have become more prominent. While gaps between East, Center, and West have been widely discussed, North-South gaps have received less attention. The study found that both population and economic gravity centers in China have generally moved southwest, with the South-North disparities in population and economy becoming increasingly salient. Urbanization, industrialization, and market prosperity were identified as key factors influencing population density and economic growth.
