Effect of acid catalysts on hydrothermal carbonization of Malaysian oil palm residues (leaves, fronds, and shells) for hydrochar production

Mariam Ameen et al.

Summary: The Malaysian oil palm industry generates a significant amount of solid waste as oil palm residue, which can be converted into valuable energy-derived products through hydrothermal carbonization. The study examines the effect of reaction temperature, residence time, and acid catalysts on the HTC process, and finds that the presence of acid catalysts increases the yield of hydrochar produced from oil palm residues.

Kinetic and isotherm insights of Diclofenac removal by sludge derived hydrochar

Sadish Oumabady et al.

Summary: Recently, hydrothermal carbonization has been identified as the most viable solution for managing solid waste with high moisture content. In this study, hydrochar derived from paper board mill sludge was activated using KOH and its potential to remove Diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, from aqueous solution was evaluated. The activated hydrochars demonstrated porous, spherical micro-structures with a higher fraction of oxygenated functional groups, enabling efficient adsorption of Diclofenac. The adsorption kinetics followed a second-order reaction and the Langmuir isotherm model. The post-activated hydrochar exhibited the highest adsorption capacity of 37.23 mg g(-1) for an initial Diclofenac concentration of 40 mg L-1 at an equilibrium time of 15 hours.

Study on the formation mechanism of hydrothermal prefabricated activated carbon and its adsorption capacity for malachite green

Xin Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, activated carbon (AC) adsorbents were prepared from hydrothermally pretreated pine sawdust (PS) by KOH activation. The physicochemical properties of AC were characterized, and it was found to have rich pores and surface functional groups for efficient removal of malachite green (MG) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption mechanism, including kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics, was explored, revealing that chemisorption dominated in the homogeneous and monolayer adsorption and the diffusion process was controlled by intraparticle diffusion. The adsorption capacity was significantly influenced by temperature, with an increase in temperature leading to higher adsorption capacity.

Durable Plastic Goods: A Source of Microplastics and Chemical Additives in the Built and Natural Environments

Robert C. Hale et al.

Summary: Marine plastic pollution caused by single-use packaging is a growing concern. Durable plastics used for longer-term purposes are more likely to contain persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemical additives. These additives and polymer fragments are released into enclosed indoor spaces during the service lives of plastic products, leading to human exposure and eventually reaching wastewater treatment plants. However, only around half of global wastewater receives any treatment. Upgrading wastewater treatment and excluding certain solids from land-applied biosolids could significantly reduce the release of microplastics and toxic contaminants.

Bamboo derived hydrochar microspheres fabricated by acid-assisted hydrothermal carbonization

Shen Zhang et al.

Summary: Functional hydrochar microspheres were successfully fabricated using bamboo residues through acid-assisted hydrothermal carbonization. The addition of acids significantly influenced the reaction pathway and promoted the hydrolysis process, leading to the formation of single micron carbon spheres or irregularly shaped particles. This study demonstrates the potential of acid-assisted hydrothermal carbonization for producing functional hydrochar microspheres.

Removal of heavy metals from water using engineered hydrochar: Kinetics and mechanistic approach

Kannan Nadarajah et al.

Summary: The study investigated the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions from aqueous solution using engineered hydrochar produced with an iron catalyst, revealing that the addition of iron catalyst enhanced the adsorptive performance through surface functional groups and complexation mechanisms. The Langmuir isotherm model provided the best fit for adsorption, and thermodynamic parameters indicated a spontaneous and endothermic process for both metal ions. This study contributes new knowledge on the role of the iron catalyst in enhancing the functional properties and adsorption mechanisms of engineered hydrochar.

Summary: This study reports the adsorption properties and mechanisms of heavy metals Ni2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+ on avocado seed hydrochar. Statistical physics calculations revealed the key roles of phenolic and carboxylic functional groups on the surface of hydrochar in the adsorption process. The multi-ionic adsorption of heavy metals on hydrochar surface showed an endothermic adsorption behavior, where carboxylic functional groups outperformed phenolic groups in terms of adsorption capacities.
