Crystalline ZnO Photocatalysts Prepared at Ambient Temperature: Influence of Morphology on p-Nitrophenol Degradation in Water

Julien G. Mahy et al.

Summary: Since the Industrial Revolution, technological advances have led to significant emissions of pollutants, affecting ecosystems worldwide. The detection and degradation of pollutants have become critical issues, with more than 59 remediation technologies developed, including advanced oxidation processes and biological remediation. The use of ZnO photocatalysts for water treatment has gained popularity, with different morphologies produced through a green sol-gel process showing promising photocatalytic activity for organic pollutant degradation. pH was found to be the key parameter controlling ZnO morphology, while the photoactivity was mainly influenced by the specific surface area of the material. The ZnO produced with the green process showed comparable photoactivity to a commercial TiO2 photocatalyst without the need for a calcination step.
