Characterization of chitosan with different degree of deacetylation and equal viscosity in dissolved and solid state - Insights by various complimentary methods

Janek Weisspflog et al.

Summary: Chitosan has attracted interest due to its sufficient charge density under biological, non-hazardous conditions. This work focuses on characterizing important parameters of chitosan, such as solubility, crystallinity, degree of deacetylation, and molecular weight, in a simple and convenient way. Various techniques including NMR, PCD, FTIR, CHN-EA, conductometric/potentiometric titrations, and AF4-LS were used to determine these parameters.

Development and properties of bacterial cellulose, curcumin, and chitosan composite biodegradable films for active packaging materials

Yixin Xu et al.

Summary: The research focused on constructing biodegradable films using chitosan, bacterial cellulose, and curcumin. Results showed that chitosan with higher molecular weight exhibited superior properties and released active substances when placed in 95% ethanol, indicating potential use as promising materials for food packaging.

Effect of Curcumin Addition on the Properties of Biodegradable Pectin/Chitosan Films

Qingtong Xie et al.

Summary: A pectin/chitosan matrix-loaded curcumin film was prepared using a deep eutectic solvent as the solvent and plasticizer. Curcumin addition improved the barrier, mechanical, antioxidant, and antiseptic properties of the polysaccharide-based film, but caused a decrease in light transmission and elongation. The addition of curcumin also changed the film's color without significantly affecting its moisture content.

Preparation and Characterization of Functional Films Based on Chitosan and Corn Starch Incorporated Tea Polyphenols

Lepeng Gao et al.

Summary: The study developed functional films based on chitosan and corn starch incorporated tea polyphenols, and investigated the effect of different concentrations of tea polyphenols on the film properties. The results showed that the incorporation of tea polyphenols led to darker appearance and increased water solubility, while decreasing moisture content and swelling degree. Hydrogen bonding between components contributed to the stability of the blend films.

Physicochemical properties of chitosan/zein/essential oil emulsion-based active films functionalized by polyphenols

Feng Xue et al.

Summary: This study developed active films containing different types of polyphenols which significantly improved the physicochemical, antioxidative, and antimicrobial properties of the films. Polyphenols interacted with other film components through chemical interactions, forming a more compact and homogeneous film structure, showing higher ability to inhibit foodborne pathogens and spoilage bacteria growth, as well as strong free radical scavenging ability.
