Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Albumin stabilized Pt nanoparticles as radiosensitizer for sensitization of breast cancer cells under X-ray radiation therapy

Yuhui Zhang et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of platinum nanoparticles coated with bovine serum albumin (Pt@BSA NPs) as a radiosensitizer in radiotherapy. The results showed that Pt@BSA NPs had good stability and biocompatibility, and exhibited enhanced toxicity towards breast cancer cells in the presence of X-rays.

A detailed experimental and Monte Carlo analysis of gold nanoparticle dose enhancement using 6 MV and 18 MV external beam energies in a macroscopic scale

Tara Gray et al.

Summary: Enhancement of dose due to gold nanoparticles in external beam radiation therapy has been quantified for energies of 6 and 18 MV through experimental and Monte Carlo simulations. The highest enhancement was observed for the 18 MV beam at the highest tested GNP concentration, with a DEF of 1.02. Increasing gold concentration and energy in the megavoltage range were found to increase DEF, with a good agreement between measured and simulated results shown across all data sets.

Prostate Cancer Targeted X-Ray Fluorescence Imaging via Gold Nanoparticles Functionalized With Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA)

Daiki Hara et al.

Summary: This study developed PSMA-targeted gold nanoparticles to enhance prostate cancer therapy and established an X-ray fluorescence imaging system to monitor GNP delivery. Results showed enhanced tumor uptake and peak accumulation at approximately 24 hours after administration of PSMA-targeted GNPs. The XRFproj/XFCT imaging system proved to be accurate for quantifying GNPs within tumors noninvasively.

Quantification of the radiosensitization effect of high-Z nanoparticles on photon irradiated cells: combining Monte Carlo simulations and an analytical approach to the local effect model

W. Melo-Bernal et al.

Summary: A combined framework is proposed in this study to consider the radiosensitization effect of nanoparticles (NPs) in two steps. The first step involves evaluating the radial dose distribution (RDD) around NPs using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, followed by an analytical approach to assess the average dose and number of lesions in cell targets caused by ionized NPs. This framework provides a practical alternative to lengthy MC simulations for assessing the response of cell cultures to irradiation treatments assisted with NPs across a range of cell geometries, NP distributions, and irradiation schemes.
