A novel model of traumatic femoral head necrosis in rats developed by microsurgical technique

Yongxiang Lv et al.

Summary: The study successfully established an original and highly selective rat model in which traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head was induced by surgical deprivation of the anterior-superior retinacular vasculature.

Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head

Summary: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head is a progressive and debilitating condition with a variety of causes, and total hip arthroplasty is the definitive treatment. Further research, including large patient registries, is needed to better understand this condition.

Avascular Necrosis of Femoral Head-Overview and Current State of the Art

Wojciech Konarski et al.

Summary: Avascular necrosis of the femoral head is a condition caused by disruption of blood supply. Diagnosis can be established based on patients' complaints, medical history, and radiographic findings. There is currently no consensus on the treatment of this disease, with non-surgical methods recommended for early-stage patients and surgery recommended for advanced cases.

Construction and validation of steroid-induced rabbit osteonecrosis model

Tongtong Zhu et al.

Summary: Osteonecrosis is a common orthopedic disease that can result in joint collapse without timely treatment. The clinical use of high-dose steroids is a common cause of osteonecrosis. Currently, there is a lack of standardized protocol for constructing osteonecrosis animal models, and the survival and model formation rates are unsatisfactory. This study successfully established a rabbit model of osteonecrosis by optimizing the construction protocol.

Type VI Collagen Regulates Endochondral Ossification in the Temporomandibular Joint

Taishi Komori et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of type VI collagen in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) cartilage and finds that it is crucial for endochondral ossification in the TMJ. Alpha 2(VI) deficiency leads to abnormal chondrocyte differentiation and maturation, and alters gene expression profiles related to cell cycle and extracellular matrix (ECM) organization. The study also suggests deregulation of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) activity during chondrocyte differentiation.

Effect of vascularized periosteum on revitalization of massive bone isografts: An experimental study in a rabbit model

David Barastegui et al.

Summary: This study conducted in rabbits found that the association of vascularized periosteum to a massive bone isograft accelerates bone graft substitution into newly formed bone, but does not lead to bone graft revitalization.

Strategies to Identify Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in Minimally Manipulated Human Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate Lack Consensus

Severin Ruoss et al.

Summary: In this study, five strategies for identifying MSCs were compared in clinical-grade BMAC-MSCs and cultured MSCs. The findings suggest a need for liberalized methods to identify any MSCs in fresh human BMAC, as well as a lack of consensus at the single cell transcriptome and protein expression levels.

Reprogrammed mesenchymal stem cells derived from iPSCs promote bone repair in steroid-associated osteonecrosis of the femoral head

Meiling Zhou et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that reprogramming ONFH-BMSCs to iPSC-MSCs could reverse abnormal proliferation, differentiation, and DNA methylation patterns, and transplantation of iPSC-MSCs effectively promoted bone repair and angiogenesis in the necrosis area of the femoral head.

Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head Safely Healed with Autologous, Expanded, Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in a Multicentric Trial with Minimum 5 Years Follow-Up

Enrique Gomez-Barrena et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the safety and early efficacy of treating early femoral head osteonecrosis with autologous mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) expanded from bone marrow. Results showed that 80% of patients maintained head sphericity and showed bone regeneration at 2 years, with 19% converting to total hip replacement (THR) after 5 years.

Summary: Non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) predominantly affects adults younger than 50 years, leading to femoral head collapse and hip arthritis. The use of corticosteroids for leukemia and organ transplantation has contributed to the increasing prevalence of ONFH.
