Prognostic value of hypothyroidism in patients undergoing intensity-modulated radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Jing-Jin Weng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of hypothyroidism and thyroxine replacement therapy on the prognosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients. The results showed that patients with hypothyroidism had better survival rates. Hypothyroidism was identified as a positive independent prognostic factor. Thyroxine replacement therapy did not negatively affect the survival rates of these patients.

Cancer-derived exosomal HSPC111 promotes colorectal cancer liver metastasis by reprogramming lipid metabolism in cancer-associated fibroblasts

Chong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study identified HSPC111 as a key gene in promoting pre-metastatic niche formation and colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM). HSPC111 altered the lipid metabolism of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), leading to the formation of a favorable microenvironment for cancer metastasis. This study suggests that targeting HSPC111 may be a potential therapeutic strategy for preventing CRLM.

Hallmarks of Cancer: New Dimensions

Douglas Hanahan

Summary: The concept of the hallmarks of cancer is a tool for simplifying the complexity of cancer phenotypes and genotypes into basic principles. This article proposes phenotypic plasticity and disrupted differentiation as distinct hallmark capabilities, and discusses nonmutational epigenetic reprogramming and polymorphic microbiomes as enabling characteristics. Additionally, the importance of senescent cells in the tumor microenvironment is highlighted. The integrative concept of the hallmarks of cancer helps in understanding the mechanisms of cancer development and applying that knowledge to cancer medicine.

ZNF117 regulates glioblastoma stem cell differentiation towards oligodendroglial lineage

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: Improved treatment of glioblastoma (GBM) can be achieved by inducing differentiation of glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs). The study identifies zinc finger protein 117 (ZNF117) as a regulator of GSC differentiation via Notch signaling through interaction with JAG2, and suggests that it can be targeted for therapy.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma: an evolving paradigm

Kenneth C. W. Wong et al.

Summary: Over the past three decades, significant progress has been made in understanding the molecular biology and treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated cancer. Technological advances have led to the introduction of proton therapy and other contemporary radiotherapy approaches, with continued efforts to determine the optimal sequencing of chemotherapy with radiotherapy through decades of clinical trials.
