Primary cold atmospheric plasma combined with low dose cisplatin as a possible adjuvant combination therapy for HNSCC cells-an in-vitro study

Teresa F. Brunner et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the cytostatic effects of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) on different HNSCC cell lines and its combination treatment with low dose cisplatin. The results showed that 120 s of CAP exposure significantly reduced cell viability, while 60 s of exposure increased DNA damage. Concurrent treatment with CAP and low dose cisplatin exhibited additive effects, and CAP could restore the sensitivity of Cal 27 cells to cisplatin.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

Cold atmospheric plasma as an interface biotechnology for enhancing surgical implants

Fei Tan et al.

Summary: Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is widely researched for its direct and indirect applications in plasma medicine, including enhancing the clinical performance of surgical implants by improving the implant-tissue interface through various biotechnological strategies. Understanding the processes at the implant-tissue interface is crucial for effective application of CAP in interface biotechnology. This preclinical review focuses on recent advances in CAP-assisted implant-based therapy for major surgical specialties, aiming to explore unique opportunities and challenges in translating implant science to plasma medicine.

Cold atmospheric plasma induced genotoxicity and cytotoxicity in esophageal cancer cells

Hanieh Estarabadi et al.

Summary: The study showed that direct treatment with cold atmospheric plasma had a significant cytotoxic impact on esophageal cancer cells, while indirect exposure was less effective. Genotoxicity analysis indicated that direct treatment caused an increase in DNA damage and shifted cells towards apoptosis. Additionally, higher concentrations of H2O2 and NO2- were observed in direct plasma treatment compared to indirect treatment. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the functional effects of cold atmospheric plasma on esophageal cancer cells and suggest potential for further research in cancer treatment.

Cold Atmospheric Plasma Changes the Amino Acid Composition of Solutions and Influences the Anti-Tumor Effect on Melanoma Cells

Stephanie Arndt et al.

Summary: Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) has anti-tumor effects transmitted through direct treatment or plasma-treated solutions (PTS) containing various amino acids and vitamins. Different plasma modes and treatment durations affect the production of reactive species in PTS, influencing the composition of active components and anti-tumor mechanisms. The findings are crucial for plasma device development and tumor treatment effectiveness.

Summary: Head and neck cancer is the seventh most common type of cancer worldwide, with the predominant risk factors being tobacco use, alcohol abuse, and oncogenic viruses. Treatment typically involves a multidisciplinary approach with surgery, radiotherapy, and systemic therapy, and is challenging due to site-specific and histology-specific variations.

Summary: Mitochondrial targeted therapy is a promising approach for treating refractory cancer, and NTPAM has been shown to induce HNC cell death through enhanced apoptosis. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that NTPAM-induced mitochondrial damage and upregulation of ATF4/CHOP play roles in this process.

Summary: The piezoelectric direct discharge (PDD) is a new type of atmospheric pressure gaseous discharge for production of cold plasma. It utilizes the piezoelectric cold plasma generator (PCPG) and resonant piezoelectric transformer (RPT) for operation. PDD is used for treating electrically nonconducting surfaces and as a plasma bridge for different excitation electrodes.
