A Microclip Peripheral Nerve Interface (μcPNI) for Bioelectronic Interfacing with Small Nerves

Cami C. Rowan et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel peripheral nerve interface (PNI) that breaks the tradeoff between selectivity and invasiveness by interfacing with small nerves, demonstrating electromechanical robustness and reliable neural activity recording and stimulation capabilities. The new PNI design could also guide the development of other types of PNIs for optical, thermal, ultrasonic, or chemical applications.

In vivo closed-loop control of a locust's leg using nerve stimulation

Francisco Zurita et al.

Summary: This article presents a simple closed-loop mechanism to control the mean angle of a locust's leg in real time by modulating the frequency of the stimulation on its extensor motor nerve. The system can be controlled with a single-input, single-output feedback loop and serves as a useful model for learning neural control.

Stretchable gold nanowire-based cuff electrodes for low-voltage peripheral nerve stimulation

Samuel Lienemann et al.

Summary: This study developed a high performance soft and stretchable cuff electrode based on inert materials for low-voltage nerve stimulation. The stretchable cuff electrodes showed excellent stability under strain cycling and one million stimulation pulses, achieving saturated homogeneous stimulation of the sciatic nerve at only 200 mV. The combination of favourable mechanical properties and good electrode performance makes it ideal for low power supply applications within bioelectronic medicine.

Sensory feedback for limb prostheses in amputees

Stanisa Raspopovic et al.

Summary: Commercial prosthetic devices currently lack natural sensory feedback, leading to unphysiological movement and health issues for users. Restoring natural sensory feedback to amputees is a clinical need that has not been met. Various neurotechnological approaches have been proposed for developing optimal sensory feedback restoration devices for arm and leg amputees.

Inkjet-Printed and Electroplated 3D Electrodes for Recording Extracellular Signals in Cell Culture

Leroy Grob et al.

Summary: Recent investigations into cardiac or nervous tissues require 3D electrical recording, leading to the fabrication of 3D microelectrode arrays using additive manufacturing technology. The user-defined 3D electrodes were produced by adjusting the number of deposited silver nanoparticle ink droplets. The functionality of the array was confirmed through impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and recordings of extracellular potentials from HL-1 cells.
