Two Decades of Active Surveillance for Prostate Cancer in a Single-Center Cohort: Favorable Outcomes after Transurethral Resection of the Prostate

Sarah Hagmann et al.

Summary: This study investigated the outcomes of active surveillance for low-risk prostate cancer over a period of 20 years, and found that active surveillance is a safe option with approximately half of the patients eventually requiring definitive treatment.

The cost, survival, and quality-of-life implications of guideline-discordant imaging for prostate cancer

Aaron N. Winn et al.

Summary: This study used a microsimulation model to investigate the impact of imaging based on guidelines on healthcare costs and patient health outcomes. The results showed that ideal upfront imaging according to guidelines can reduce medical costs and slightly improve health outcomes compared to current practices.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Early health economic analysis of 1.5 T MRI-guided radiotherapy for localized prostate cancer: Decision analytic modelling

Charisma Hehakaya et al.

Summary: An early health economic analysis was conducted to assess the cost-effectiveness of MR-Linac for localized prostate cancer treatment. The study found that MR-Linac was cost-effective compared to 20 and 39 fractions EBRT at baseline, but required substantial reductions in complications to be cost-effective compared to 5 fractions EBRT and LDR brachytherapy. The results were highly sensitive to the utilities of complications and the probability of biochemical progression.

Lifetime Health and Economic Outcomes of Active Surveillance, Radical Prostatectomy, and Radiotherapy for Favorable-Risk Localized Prostate Cancer

Koen Degeling et al.

Summary: The study found that selecting radiation therapy (RT) as the initial management strategy for low-risk or favorable-risk localized prostate cancer may be a cost-effective choice, while active surveillance (AS) may result in fewer treatment complications. Radical prostatectomy (RP) had lower cost-effectiveness compared to RT.
