Summary: Shear wave elastography is a promising technique for assessing arterial stiffness. This study investigated the safety of SWE by examining the induced arterial strain and strain rate. The results showed that SWE does not expose the artery to higher strain rate than normal blood pressure variations and the induced strain is one order of magnitude higher than normal blood pressure variations.

Summary: The study found that contrast agent inside-out direction diffusion is an important indicator for detecting vulnerable plaque fibrous cap rupture, with the degree of enhancement correlating with the morphology of intraplaque neovascularization. Increasing plaque enhancement was associated with higher microvessel density, larger microvessel area, and more irregular-shaped microvessels, indicating an increased risk of plaque vulnerability.

Summary: Combining stress echocardiography (SE) with carotid contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) may provide incremental prognostic value for predicting the occurrence of cardiovascular events beyond clinical risk factors or either test alone. Carotid CEUS detected intraplaque neovascularization (IPN) and localized to plaque shoulder was found to be an independent predictor of cardiovascular events in patients referred for SE.

Carotid Intraplaque Neovascularization Predicts Ischemic Stroke Recurrence in Patients with Carotid Atherosclerosis

Carotid Plaque Inflammation Imaged by PET and Prediction of Recurrent Stroke at 5 Years

Summary: The study aimed to determine the association between carotid plaque inflammation detected by F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18)FDG-PET and late (5-year) recurrent stroke. Results showed that baseline plaque SUVmax and SCAIL score independently predicted 5-year ipsilateral recurrent stroke. This suggests that plaque inflammation-related (18)FDG uptake could improve identification of recurrent ipsilateral stroke over a 5-year period.

The Firefly-positive plaques showed greater vulnerability compared to Firefly-negative plaques, with a sensitivity and specificity of 71.9% and 73.6% for plaques with a score of 2 points.
