Skeletal muscle wasting: the estrogen side of sexual dimorphism

Shawna L. McMillin et al.

Summary: The importance of understanding sex differences in biological and physiological mechanisms is now more recognized. It is crucial to consider sex as a biological variable when developing interventions for muscle wasting conditions. However, the effects of sex or sex hormones on muscle wasting are still not well understood. While recent investigations are making progress in assessing the impact of sex-specific hormones, more scientific tools are needed in this field.

Prevalence of Sarcopenia in Pain Patients and Correlation Between the Two Conditions: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Taiping Lin et al.

Summary: This review investigated the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with pain and found a significant association between pain and sarcopenia. The prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with pain was relatively high, highlighting the importance of screening and early management of sarcopenia in this population.

Muscle strength and incidence of depression and anxiety: findings from the UK Biobank prospective cohort study

Veronica Cabanas-Sanchez et al.

Summary: Handgrip strength is inversely associated with incident depression and anxiety. It could be used as a simple, non-invasive, and inexpensive measure to stratify patients and identify those at elevated risk of mental health problems. Future research should investigate if resistance training can prevent the occurrence of mental health conditions.

Prognostic Value of Handgrip Strength in Older Adults Undergoing Cardiac Surgery

Rosie Fountotos et al.

Summary: Handgrip strength (HGS) is a simple and effective tool that can predict mortality and prolonged recovery after cardiac surgery. Weak HGS was associated with higher mortality rates, prolonged length of stay, and discharge to a health care facility. HGS cutoffs of <26 kg in men and <16 kg in women had the highest predictive performance for mortality outcomes.

Summary: The study found a positive association between hand grip strength and health-related quality of life in postmenopausal women. Data showed that women with higher hand grip strength had a lower prevalence of moderate/severe problems in various dimensions of HRQoL.

Correlation between the Neuropathic PainDETECT Screening Questionnaire and Pain Intensity in Chronic Pain Patients

Sebastian Lukas Koenig et al.

Summary: The study found a significant correlation between PD-Q scores and NRS scores in chronic pain patients at baseline and 1-month follow-up visits. A significant proportion of chronic pain patients exhibited neuropathic features at their first visit to the outpatient clinic. The PD-Q is a useful screening tool for clinicians to identify NP that may require further diagnostic evaluation or therapeutic intervention, and may also help predict treatment response.

Exercise and Neuropathic Pain: A General Overview of Preclinical and Clinical Research

Brianna N. Leitzelar et al.

Summary: Neuropathic pain is characterized by tingling, burning, and/or shooting pain in the somatosensory system. Exercise has been shown to have positive effects on reducing aspects of neuropathic pain, although not all pain measures improve following exercise training. Future research is needed to further understand the role of exercise in managing neuropathic pain.
