The effect of two retraining programs, barefoot running vs increasing cadence, on kinematic parameters: A randomized controlled trial

Alejandro Molina-Molina et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of two 10-week running retraining programs on foot kinematics and spatiotemporal parameters, with barefoot and cadence retraining showing moderate effects on reducing footstrike angle and rearfoot prevalence, and small effects on increasing cadence. These programs offer low-cost options for gait modification in recreational runners.

Summary: This systematic review provides a comprehensive overview of biomechanical risk factors (BRFs) for the most common overuse injuries (ROIs) in running. The evidence for most ROI-specific risk factors is limited, highlighting the need for further high-quality studies.

Biomechanical effects following footstrike pattern modification using wearable sensors

Peter P. K. Chan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biomechanical effects of an in-field sensor-based gait retraining program on modifying footstrike pattern among runners during level, uphill, and downhill running. The results showed that the program was effective in modifying footstrike pattern, with significant changes in biomechanical parameters such as footstrike angle, VILR, stride length, and cadence observed after the training. However, discrepancies in these parameters were found between different slope conditions.

Effects of Foot Strike Techniques on Running Biomechanics: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Yilin Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that compared to rearfoot strike (RFS), forefoot strike (FFS) results in lower impact force magnitude and loading rate, decreased ankle stiffness, reduced knee extension moment, eccentric power, negative work, and patellofemoral joint stress. However, FFS increases ankle plantarflexion moment, eccentric power, negative work, and axial contact force compared to RFS.

Summary: In collegiate cross country runners, low step rate is an important risk factor for bone stress injury. Increasing step rate is associated with decreased risk of BSI.

The effect of trunk flexion angle on lower limb mechanics during running

Anna Warrener et al.

Summary: Research has shown that trunk flexion angle significantly affects stride kinematics, lower extremity joint moments, and ground reaction forces during running. Specifically, an increase in trunk flexion angle leads to decreased stride length, increased stride frequency, increased hip extensor moments, and decreased knee extensor and ankle plantarflexor moments.
