Macular Edema after Successful Pars Plana Vitrectomy for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment: Factors Affecting Edema Development and Considerations for Treatment

Irini Chatziralli et al.

Summary: The study investigated the incidence of macular edema after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair, finding that 14 out of 86 patients developed macular edema post surgery. Factors such as preoperative macula off RRD, duration of RRD >1 week, and proliferative vitreoretinopathy were identified as more prone to the development of macular edema. The study also demonstrated a significant improvement in visual acuity and retinal thickness at month 12 post intravitreal dexamethasone implant treatment compared to baseline.

Summary: The study revealed a high incidence of INL-MCs in patients after silicone oil removal, which are associated with impaired vision and macular vascular remodeling, similar to retrograde maculopathy.

Summary: Visual acuity improved as the number of eyes with SD-OCT lesions decreased after macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery. A long time to surgery was the only preoperative factor associated with poor visual acuity recovery after retinal detachment surgery.

Need for Retinal Detachment Reoperation Based on Primary Repair Method Among Commercially Insured Patients, 2003-2016

Mary-Grace R. Reeves et al.

Summary: About one in five patients require reoperation within 90 days after primary repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Male patients with pseudophakia, vitreous hemorrhage, and worse systemic health are more likely to need reoperation. Primary pneumatic retinopexy has the highest odds of reoperation, while primary laser barricade has the lowest.

Macular edema after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair: risk factors, OCT analysis, and treatment responses

Summary: Risk factors for CME include complex retinal detachment repairs requiring multiple surgeries, and pseudophakic or aphakic lens status. Although this cCME was associated with poor therapeutic response, corticosteroids were the most effective studied treatments.

Surgical repair of primary non-complex rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in the modern era of small-gauge vitrectomy

Omar Moinuddin et al.

Summary: In this study, anatomic and visual outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), scleral buckling (SB) and combined PPV/SB as surgical treatments for primary, non-complex rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) were reported. The data analysis of 751 eyes showed that primary PPV without adjunct SB provides excellent anatomic and visual outcomes, regardless of lens status, macular involvement or pathology location. The results suggest that PPV may be a viable option for managing primary non-complex RRD in the modern era of small-gauge vitrectomy.
